perhaps while it was easy for them to climb down the overflow(downward gushing of water pushes them down), they couldn't climb back up into the main tank area against the gush of water countering them on the way up? i'd suppose the overflow compartment would be too bare to sustain any sort of life for long.

My snails move in and out of the overflow without problems. Weird.
