I've had mine for 2 years.. i had a break for 1 year.. when i restart and fire up my HnS... its went straight to work.. very satisfied... bascially i believe its all in the needle wheel pump... the main housing for the skimmer has got nothing fancy. tuning the skimmer is straight forward by twisting the outlet to restrict flow... one thing to note though is that there is no "drainage" for water outlet. i left mine to flow down (this means splashing).. however this can be easily overcome by placing a filter pad for the water to flow out..

I've stuck on with HnS all these years as i'm happy with performance. This means that I've not much experience to make comparison against other renown brands..

Skimmer i used over the years ---> Weipro --> Macro --> Dymax --> HnS.

Hope this helps...

normally i'll tune to the neck of the collection cup.. at the level where you can detach the collection cup from the main body... Then let it run in for a few days. you should collect some skimmate... thereafter, depending on how wet/dry you wanna skim, adjust accordingly...

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply and advice ryanlio and rockyboy. After installation the tiny bubbles on the collection cup should be at where? Right at the base, middle or near the tip of the cup?

Mine at middle of the collection cup. Would be semi-dry skimmate. Every 2 -3 days need to clean the cup.

Thanks rockyboy. I think I'll do the same. Can really see the kopi o brewing . It all depends on how (kao) strong u want your kopi to be. Right? hahaha For the past two days since installation I put it slightly lower than the middle. My nitrate is definitely under control now.

Thanks once again guys!

If you have nitrates problem, try to minimise feeding for a while. Throw in some bacteria. Use cheato as nutrient exports and add more live rocks.

Hi all... just like to ask if this is normal.... seems like the rubbery surface has been scraped off but I'm not sure cos I bought my H & S skimmer 2nd hand. When in operation, the skimmer produces a rattling noise esp when I try to adjust the outflow to less.

If I hv to replace this particular part, any idea how much it would cost and where to get it?

The impellor sides had been scratched/ scraped off oredi. This may be the reason for the rattling noise. It's not normal to have rattling noise when u adjust outflow. The prob is, aquabee needlewheel impellor is not sold anywhere (not that i know of). Even if it's for sale, it'll cost a bomb.

My suggestion:

1. Remove the calcium buildup on your impellor and shaft. Can see from the pics there're some. This may result in the rattling noise. Soak it in white vinegar for abt 2 hours, then brush off with a toothbrush. Careful not to break the impellor shaft.

2. Apply a slight layer of silicon grease on the rotor (the part that's scratched). The type of silicon grease i have is harmless to reef/ fishes. It'll lubricate the surface of the impellor.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Sealife at braddell is the authorised dealer in Singapore for HnS product. They have the spare parts for sale. I actually wanted to replace the impeller last time after using for 3-4 yrs. Give Sam (Owner) a call and check with him what to bring over. They need some verification i think.

regards,

Thanks guys! Anyway... tried adjusting it. The rattling noise becomes more apparent only when I adjust the flow to low so 'bo pian' lor.... I keep the flow on high for the moment. Thinking of changing to reef octopus maybe later in the year...

Hi bro,

The problem with the noise is due to the scratched impellor, this is usually cause by substrate/debris being suck into the pump.

1) If the problem is just on the impellor, you can easily replace it with the local agent or online.

2) If the impellor housing is also scratched then it will be more tricky because you will need to replace the whole needlewheel pump which is not cheap.

IMHO, don't think Reef Octopus will be on par with a H&S.

change the rubber pieces at both end of the ceramic shaft.Might be the pieces worn-out causing the whole thing to wrattle.Similar case with deltec skimmer using aquabee pump.

Bro, know ppl modified their reef octo skimmer, etc but so far, has not seen or heard another modifying their deltec, H&S, bubble King, etc. Maybe they are expensive or proven performance and technology in their needle wheel pump. Only know ppl modify drainage or sponge filter to reduce bubble from forming.....
