SRC Member blacknails Posted November 16, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted November 16, 2003 Well, according to what I've experieced with macroalgae in my Reef Aquarium you actually don't really need fertilizers of any sort for them to grow well.. As long as they have adequate lighting, some nitrates, and not too many grazers in the tank, they will grow and grow and thrive.. Mine actually grow so so much that they get quite irritating to trim.. Yap so lighting and I guess some nitrates is very important and all that is required.. BUT If you really want to use marine fertilizers then I guess those fertilizers sold exclusively for marine macro algae would not do much harm to your tank... But make very sure that you don't use too much or else there might be an algae bloom in your tank and make sure that you only use fertilizers that are for marine tanks!! Achilles Tang
It may be some form of iron supplement. Some marine macroalgae may crash due to lack of iron in the water. But you have to dose appropriately and with care.
SRC Member joachimsim Posted November 16, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted November 16, 2003 Achilles Tang, Conrad right? WHat brand of fertilise you use? I don't know if my Macroalgae is growing. BUt I am tempted but afraid to dose some of my Iron intensive Fertiliser for my Freshwater Planted Tank..

SRC Member joachimsim Posted November 16, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted November 16, 2003 Donno abt that..but in Fresh Water Biology...Algae feeds on Po4 and NO3.....not Iron...Not sure abt other Trace Elements... IS strontium and Ca and iodine considered Trace Elements?
Morgan
You sure iron is not require for freshwater? Too much iron and you'll have a very green and hairy tank
FuEl
In freshwater planted tanks...the more red a plant..the more iron3+ you will have to dose.. In marine...I think the same also applies to red algaes (Rhodophytes). As for the greener algae..they won't need that much iron..frequent changing of your water should be able to keep up with their demands.
