filter media in sump

hi guys,

can advise which are the best filter media to place in a sump?

i'm going to place the following

1. rowaPhos

2. Carbon

another question, is bio ring suitable?

Bio ring is for freshwater. Try to concentrate internet search and readings on anaerobic bacteria on NO3. That will let know what you need most and design for your sump.

hi, firstly, bioring is fine for startup of a tank as you will need lots of bacteria to handle the ammonia and nitrite spike, and then after that more bacteria to accomodate livestock increase. However, once your tank matures, you will find nitrate to be a problem, thats where you need to plan really well, best of course is to have a refugium full of chaeto. If you are gonna use rowaPhos, i suggest you get a fluidizing reactor as the particles are pretty small, if you want to place a phosphate removing media in the sump, use one which comes in a pelleted form so as to minimize clumping and still get good flow. Carbon is alright to use in sump especially rowaCarbon since its pelleted. However, instead of carbon, can I suggest to you that you try using the product Chemipure? It works like carbon but better as it lasts longer and does not release phosphate into the aquarium unlike carbon. Hope this helps you.

ammonia and nitrite is easily settled. You can buy those bacteria from LFS.

LR and DSB is the house for NO3 bacteria which cant be bought and only grows very slow.

u can try bio home n there is 2 kind but usually for marine it will b good to buy d red one.

all the facts abt bio home r written on the box n u can buy it at clementi 328 ask lady boss when u r there.

been using it for more than 4 yrs now but bacteria supplement is still a must.

you can try add RowaBac M. some senior recommended me this but its no really a must. cos once the tank matured. the LR and sand will have enough bacteria to sustain the whole biological system.

Any brands OK, as long as not china/taiwan brand. Qianhu one also works.

Ammonia and NO2 easily settled. Although bare tanks, you can use them too but you have to dose once in 2-3 weeks. Why, I dont know, LOL. I measured and found from measurements, I need to dose more. Maybe bare tanks no LR/media so bacteria cant produce the next generation when your water current keeps pushing them around. But my reef tank never dose many yrs.

Mopiko, storm also likes to find the lady boss, LOL.

Perhaps I dont need to dose due to the amount of DSB and LR. Bigger house can accomodate more occupants.

I removed all my coral chips from my sump after running my tank for 6 mths. Remove a bit at a time like during your water changes. Replaced with more LR.

As I said there, answer given.

If you want long time, Thexder way is good. For me, I will have more LR at the first place and not having need to change again. Coral chips mainly for ammonia nitrite bacs and kH chemical balance and LR is priority for nitrate bacs. Long term, you need LR to help you on nitrate problems.

In my tank, corals chips in the compartment after filter pads. Then LR and DSB at the second compartment.
