Alternatively, you can drill a little hole just below water surface of the return outlet in your main tank so once the water level drops, there will be a break in the siphon.

A simple solution.

yo, simple DIY can prevent water ###### back into sump. No need expensive valve and can prevent microbubbles/salt splash....

Continue to place return pipe below waterline. Drill small hole, insert one of those plastic or stainless airline holder onto PVC hole. Connect shortlength airline to water surface. At end of airline plug in a one-way air-valve. Make sure this valve is one-way (into water). Commonly available at shops selling airpump. Cannot remember how much but should be less than $3 for 1.

Air-valve prevents water from squirting out of airline. When reverse flow happens, air will be sucked in and cause break-off suction.

Do a little trial first, I had use this method before!

Started my first marine tank bank in 1986. Back then it was like sacred rituals each time I bring home a coral or fish...pray pray it don't die tomorrow....Tried & tested baretank-change-water-every-2-days...undergravel...reverse undergravel...overflow...Berlin... eggcrate...algae srcubber...to DSB. Each methods has its pros & cons. A combination of some component seems ideal, that's why I'm now have a berlin refugium, and plus a home-made modified coil denitrator (only a week, still calibrating it).

I'm glad that today we can access tons of information easily over the net or books/magazines, and most important of all, share experiences with hobbyists. I kinda like D-I-Y and experimentation with new stuffs. Believe me it not only saves you lots of money, but also makes you proud that this piece of equipement you build/modified actually works.

If anyone is keen to experiment with DIY or have difficult questions, feel free to email me as I don't frequent this site. alanyeo2001@yahoo.com.sg

Happy fishkeeping to all,

Alan
