SRC Member reeftask Posted September 3, 2007 SRC Member Share Posted September 3, 2007 I have noticed that many people are struggling now and then to get rid of them. We use many types of ways but few months later they regrow. Does this means the solution we use are only killing them temporary while the Aipstasia DNA will still regrow more colonies at different places? What we need you to do is after voting, 1) let us know what solution you did 2) how long you see again aipstasia in your tank after your solution. 3) Do you have any shrimps to backup in case aipstasia regrow? 4) After you have added a new LR, you see aipstasia weeks later? 5) what other things you need us to know? thank you for your consent and time. SRC Member kareen Posted September 4, 2007 SRC Member Share Posted September 4, 2007 Think of it this way.... Joe juice, lime juice, etc are only effective X amount of time when you apply it.... Can you warrant it has eliminated it? Since we all know that a tiny tissue of atpisia will reproduce into a new one. Using animals that eats them remain effective for as long as they live..... Sponsor Glare Posted September 5, 2007 Sponsor Share Posted September 5, 2007 i saw somewhere that adding a copperband will do the trick.....so i went to try it out and it worked... BUT pls be sure that the fella is as small as possible to minimise the risk if it start to take a liking to corals (at least it is small and wont cause to much damage).. the results speak for itself as my tank has been free from aptisia since i introduced the fella and i can live with the tradeoff that it pecks on my sps and other stuff once in a while. Bought from Ah Beng 1 piece about 11/2 inch for a few bucks about 6 months ago. Best solution so far....zero aptisia in the tank since (touch wood)

SRC Member kareen Posted September 5, 2007 SRC Member Share Posted September 5, 2007 Copperband usually likes to peck on anemones, zoanthids, mushrooms and softies.Favourite food for them. could it be pecking due to interesting yummy critters near the corals? I do not see my copperband taking meals off mushrooms, zoas, anemone.... it may peck occassionally but very often I saw the copperband eating some little critters after the peck... SRC Member Creetin Posted September 6, 2007 SRC Member Share Posted September 6, 2007 a better solution would be the seagrass filefish usually sold by Henry of ML. more reef safe, leaves sps alone and loves apitasia, cheaper than peppermint shrimps which are sort of harder to come by, wont be attacked by shrimp eating fish cos its not a shrimp! very hardy too! SRC Member reeftask Posted September 7, 2007 Author SRC Member Share Posted September 7, 2007 well, they are not reef safe. Furthermore I never trust LFS. They can tell you that they are the greatest but they are not. Last week a friend went to a LFS after confirming LFS has a peppermint shrimp on the phone. He was shocked that they were glass shrimps. This shop has been business for 4-5 years minimum. Until today some LFS still cannot properly identify what is the real thing they sell. I still remember some shops will still give you wrong facts. Well, they are traders and not hobbyist. So its best to get advises from the experts hobbyist here but however most of these experts are no active here. I think the best solution is to either throw away this LR or to chop away the part of this Aipstasia

SRC Member reeftask Posted October 2, 2007 Author SRC Member Share Posted October 2, 2007 BTW when I saw a demo of peppermint eating aips, seems not very clean. Some drop down. I am worry when these shrimps are full, they will ignore the tiny bits which had dropped off and these will grow out back to Aips.

I use the seagrass as well. Eat some aips and under control. All existing aips become smaller and hiding. I have used all methods and didn't works. The best part is that I took out a rock with aips and pour boiling water for about 5 minutes, thinking that it's gone, after a few days new aips appeared on the same spot. They wont die in hot boiled water. Perhaps the dna are like disease, unkillable at 100C temperature. Anyone tried pouring acid on them? Seems very afraid if fishes didnt eat properly, some bits are dropped off, they will grow to another aips.
fishchemist
I have a copperband. And its very effective. All gone within a few weeks. One or two appear from time to time but its yummy to the copperband. Gone within a day.

SRC Member Creetin Posted October 5, 2007 SRC Member Share Posted October 5, 2007 when did you do this? long ago? if long ago, never come back? latest report is i dont see e api for 1 week already. e kalk is very damaging to corals. i had to sacrifice a few zoos for the exercise until the area is like bomb dropped on it. but i hate api. always try to get rid of it.
