Live Stock with DSB

Hi Guys,

As I have 4-5" of DSB in my main tank, I need advise on what are the LS that I should nvr get. I'm aware of only a few LS that will stir up the DSB but will appreciate if anyone can give me your input.

1) Most Goby

2) Jawfish

3) A certain starfish???

4) ????

You have no problem with Six line wrasses? It had always caught my eyes. Maybe I'll try it out too.

by having a DSB in your refugium will sloves the problem... no need worry abt the types of fish

I doubt DSB in refuge will work unless the refuge is as big as the main tank rite? Correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, my setup dun have refuge yet and I'm using cannister (ya, I'm aware of the cons of using it).

Hope the senior reefer comment on this .. I am building my DSB mainly in the Refugium too ..

I found this thread where AT did response on DSB issue. AN extract of what he had wrote;

"Anyway for a DSB to be actually effective.. it should occupy the same horizontal surface as the main tank.... so unless you have a sump tank the same size as your main tank... it won't do its job."

i have kept diff wrasse for the past 4 yrs. six-ine is the only 1 i kept that dun hide in the sand. beware, it's more aggreesive than it looks. as long yr other fish & future new fish are bigger in size.

yes, i read it too from some overseas forum that DSB is more effective if it's the same size of the tank. in fact , the bigger the better. which i think make sense, coz how can a small tiny DSB able to tackle the bioload in the main tank. simple maths, IMO.

Erm another species not suitable would be the sea cucumber. I heard it'll ingest the beneficial bacteria.

I'm currently having a 4 ft DSB with 5 inch size 0 sand. I'm experimenting on it and did not do any water changes. I've about 10 corals 4 fishes and 3 snails in the main tank and my nitrate lvl is about 10-20. I have macro algae in the sump with only 30 watts of 7200K light on it.

Just to let you guys see see. Any comments? =)

You mentioned that you have macro-algea in ur sump. Since, Macro-algea is also a natural nitrate exporter, it maybe difficult to really test the effectiveness of your DSB in this case. Btw, how long has your DSB been setup?

Not long.. 3 months. I went to the beach to get some nassarius, pods n worms. Very tiring... I heard those are important espects of an effective DSB- Sandbed Critters. My macro algae grows slowly but steadily, helps a little..

U actually when to the beach to collect the sand? Wow, great effort.

Btw, how u clean them after collection?

Erm.. Not the sand lah. Catch the pods nassarius n worms.

Its at the seletar warp or something like that.

I used the pictures in books to help me identify the Pods, worms n nassarius.

Erm.. I only go out on such trips when the tide is about 0.5 and its the morning:) If your daring and can walk deeper towards the water, you find more things. I once brought back a handful of mud home and discovered many small mussel like animals. I think what's important is the loaction where you search for these things. Some areas might not have them.

Yeah, and just be considerate and take only small amounts.
