Algae problem

Recommended Posts

Anyone knows how to get rid of these pest macro algae?

I pluck them off but soon it grows again.

My NO3 is less than 10 ppm liao. Feeding is abt 10-20 pellots daily with abt 2 tangs, 2 wrasses and a goby. Corals are LPS ie blastos, gionio, mushy and zoos. 3-4 pieces of SPS. Using 4xT5, 1 giesemann 50/50 and 3 ATi Aquablue special.

Filtration is by live rocks, 20 pcs of mangroves, macro skimmer, FR with PURA phosphate and Seachem charcoal.

Pls assist , Thanks.....

Derbesia AKA Green Hair Algae

Good substrate for amphipiods , copepods and other foods for mandarinfishes !! :) BUT this nuisance algae that is NOT VERY PALATABLE to most herbivorous fishes tend to be difficult to keep it under control !!

Read up in RC some of the steps :

Maintain KH above 8 dkh ,

use P04 absorbing media

Use of Diadema Urchin , tuxedo Urchin , Trochus Snail , Astraea Snails , Limpets

Use of Rabbitfish and some angelfishes

Hope this helps :)

If ur DESPERATE : can try using Postassium Permanganate PM me for the source of the article :)

I have some if u need it :)

Hey bro,

[1] Is the algae growing on certain pcs of LR or all over your tank? I have heard stuff like LR leeching out phosphate compound. Not sure how true this is though. If it is just on a few pcs of LR and if removal of them is feasible, u might just wanna remove them.

[2] If over the entire tank, you might wanna to try not switching on the light for a few days. Will not have any harmful effected to the corals while following the advise of adjusting the parameters by fellow reefers in the post above

[3] I am using sorb-4 for phosphate removal and i believe it did work as it successfully bring down my phosphate level originally.

If all water parameters are good, the LR might be the cause as algae tends to thrive in nutrient rich surface...

Just my 2cts....hope it helps and not make u more confuse.. :paiseh::D:paiseh:

Thanks Bro.

I think my Pura Phoslock depleted. So the PO4 is increasing. Jus changed my FR media and the Mushies start opening big again. I assume this is the first sign.

Also will check Mg and KH and see how.

Keep u guys updated...

Hi guys , i'm having the same problem. I have increase the mg to 1500ppm. but it seem not to be working for my case.

I'm using grotech mg. the ting kept growing .

Please help.thanks

Your water parameters also play a part. Make sure PO4 and nitrate is 0. Use cheato for nutrient export. Then raise Mg level to abt 1500ppm. Bryopsis should disappear.
