Reduced Flow for SPS Tank at Night?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, does anyone know if the water flow rate should be reduced in an SPS tank at night? Considering that in natural conditions, currents are somewhat reduced at night and planktonic food rises for corals to feed on. Given that in our tanks, "natural" planktonic food is somewhat limited so does this mean that the flow rate should not be reduced? I use the Tunze multi-controller which has a night function which reduces flow to a minimum which may not be ideal. Your advise? :snore:

The reduction of flow will also enable your fishes to have a good night sleep... and save electricty at night :)

Thanks for the replies! :thanks:

I was worried that a reduced flow may cause RTN. As for sleeping fish, sounds really considerate and I also like the idea of saving electricity. I have only a few reef safe fishes who shud be able to find some crevices to tuck in amongst the rock work. :)

read an article on Reefcentral , its Lights off thats SPS shed Mucus coating that require to be blown away ..

Not 100% sps keeper .. but just an article i came up . so do some reading before deciding , reducing power doesnt mean turning off .. but make sure ample water motion still exist .

If you go to the natural reef at night, the currents don't stop! In fact, during the full moon, the currents are even stronger! And the corals actually become more active feeding at night with larger polyp extensions! :)

So... not true... ;)
