New 4 ft Tank

Recommended Posts

After keeping for arowana for about 4 years finally decided to step into Marine tank. With the help of a friend I have 1 x 4ft canister filter and 1 x 2 ft canster filter. 1 x 4 ft blue and white light, sand bed, live rocks and some fake marine plants.

Ideal tank wil be mainly on lionfish, butterfly and scorpion fish.

Can anyone help me to ID what fish is this? I thought is one fo the butterfly type bought. But I do not think so.

(Chaetodon Trifascialis) Chervon butterfly fish. This butterfly fish will not survive long bro. The other is a banner and a moorish idol. As a beginner, all the fish in your tank except the velvet damsel and the banner are not suitable for you. Some beginner fish like

Butterfly fish:

thread finor auriga butterfly fish

kleni butterfly fish

long nose butterfly fish

angel:

Koran

Asfur

Maculosus

Six barred

coral beauty

One of my favourite fish only.

Give me one more chance....

Ok Thanks will monitor them. So the list of butterfly u posted is easier to take care? Cos I read and kind of confusing that should I get those u listed or not? Sorry newbie.

Generally IMO, as compared to other species, butterflies are more delicate and best to avoid them if you have a new set up and for beginners.

Whatever new fishes you intend to buy, always better to read up more abt the species first in websites, books or seek opinions here etc before commiting. Will save you money and lives of fishes.

Happy reefing ;)

remove those fishes you have first.

re-buy fishes.

Well bro no need to remove. All die on me overnight as water got problems. Left my shifting starfish, panther grouper and the demsel. Now temp housing in my friend's marine tank.

In the mean time I drain out all the water, rinse the live rock and re arrange everything again and start the whole cycling process. I shall not give up even if the first time is wrong.

Now I need advise from the seniors here what are the fishes which is better for beginner. I know I should read up in the website but are there any recommended website to look through? I went to yahoo and search but not much help from there.

Thanks :D

Hi Bro

l'm not a senior in reefing but i think these are some of the useful sites on fish species, pics and care level which would behelpful to you. Do take it as a general guide as some info may differ.

http://www.marinecenter.com/fish/

http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/categ.cfm?pcatid=15

http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/fishprofi...es_Pictures.htm

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/index.php?menu=2

The most common yet very important word that most reefers wld advise is "Patience". For new tank setup, dun rush into adding LS, and for LS, dun rush into buying.

Happy reefing... :peace:

Thanks bro, do feel free to drop more suggestions. As I am still re cycling my tank again I am looking at more live rocks. I just went to reborn and get a few more pieces. Also went to get some normal tube worm.

Another friend will come over my place to help me re-structure the live rocks again as more rocks will add in. I will keep update here. :D

I'll suggest that you pop over the general section and spend sometime going through the sticky for beginners.

You probably have overstock your tank too fast and before the cycling end. Any idea what u use in ur cannister?

Cheers

JC

First top tray are sponge and filter wool, next lower tray is bio home and ceramic rings. The lowest bottom layer is active carbon which is meant for saltwater useage. (forgot which brand liao)(For the bigger canister)

The smaller canister is top try filter wool and bottom try is coral chips. Only 2 tray as it is a small canister to help in the circulation of the tank and filteration.

I'll suggest u remove the active carbon from the cannister and replace it with more biohome or equivalent. Try to get a FR for the carbon. Coral chip... hmm... I'm not a fan in using coral chip. Too un-predictable. Suggest u replace them with biohome or equivalent too.

What type of testkit u using? Are the LRs cured?

Cheers

Well a pic speaks a thousand words. This is the new set up after I re-cycle the whole tank.

set2tj5.th.jpg

Water is almost up to the brim of the tank. Add in one fan as I realise my tank water is kind of hot as about 30 to 31 degrees. Now with the fan is around 27 to 28 degrees.

Have u test the water? Has the cycling ended?

A point to note, when ur tank has juz finish cycling, go slow with ur stocking. Best to adhere to one fish per week. The most 2 for those small fishes. Reason, everytime we add new fishes, the tank will go into a mini cycle to cope with the new bio-load. This is especially true for those tank with limited LRs.

Why not sis? You can add more LRs as suggested as they formed an important part of the biological filteration, yrs a 4 ft mah.

Also, instead of dead or uncured LRs, you can choose those cured LRs offered by those nice reefers here who decomm, upgrade or having excess LRs. Will speed up the process too.

I got 2 Flame hawks actually, both got from reefers who gave up. But the one in my office tank (avartar) decided to try out what's outside the tank... and it never made it back to where it jumped out from...

They are very nice and cute fishes, especially the way they swim and rest on rocks. Very interesting to watch. I am sure u will like a flame hawk in your tank.

I had the spotted hawk in my tank. But die. I did plan to have one longnose, one spotted and one flame. Yeah they are kind of cute fellow when they explore the liverocks. Also very glutton and daring fellows. :P
