That's Cyrene Reef. Its actually in the middle of nowhere as you will not see it unless there is a really low tide.

Its off Jurong I think and you can only get there on amphibious transport during super low tides when the whole stretch is exposed. That place is VERY BIG and it'll take about like 2-3 hours to actually breifly comb the area :D

If you mean studying as in getting a qualification in Marine Biology, then I'm not although I would want to pursue that in the future.

But if you meant studying as in learning Marine Biology, then yes, I am doing that by reading university textbooks on the subject.

Anyway, for most part of my blog, we are monitoring seagrasses at the intertidal zones around Singapore and that is why you'll see that almost every entry has some pictures of seagrass.

If anyone is interested in visiting these intertidal zones, you can sign up for nature walks to some of the places. There's one coming up soon for Sentosa. CJ won't be available for a few months from around February to maybe June as there was a mass dieoff if you read it from the blog. Semakau is available but the trip there is very expensive.

That's probably the few places you guys can visit. Some places like Cyrene, P. Sekudu and the southern islands are still quite restricted to public access I think ;)

Oh and I really recommend this book by Dr Chua Ee Kiam if you guys are interested in the really secluded intertidal regions.

Its a picture journal and the proceedings go to the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research.

Should be on sale in major bookstores already

cyrene reef is surrounded by jurong island, pulau busing, bukom island.

in front off Pasir Panjang, more then 3 nautical miles away.

Thats awesome.

Did you guys spot many carpet anemones when you were there? Theres one pic i found on your blog (s haddoni) and was wondering how common s gigantea are in singapore. The sites say theyre found in singapore but they seem less common.

Im not out to collect them but if theyre found in singapore, youd assume someones selling them commercially (trying to get hold of a gigantea if i can when i get back)

Which species of carpet? (Haddoni or Gigantea?

Pretty colours?

Most are probably S. haddoni from observation but I recall seeing one specimen that looked like a S. gigantea on Cyrene.

Oh and do join the Raffles Museum on their Semakau trip if you don't mind the expense (come on, the hobby is much more expensive ;) ) because not only would you see the massive Cymodocea serrulata and Enhalus acoroides meadows, you would be able to walk up to a REEF EDGE if the guide allows it.

Trust me, standing at the edge of a reef is an extraordinary experience as one more step and you'll plunge into the very deep water (its somewhat like an underwater cliff).

I'll be going there in mid May and I'll try to take some pics of the reef edge

And lastly, a photo of me looking over one of the unused cells.

Can you believe our rubbish dump can have so much life? Go to the nature walk to find out for yourself!
