New Set-Up

Hi folks,

Wonder if this is the correct place to post for advice on tank set-up. Currently in the midst of planning for a new set-up, as current tank stand is rusting away.

Will be switching to a wooden stand, and a 2ft (l) by 2ft (B) tank. Just haven't decided on the height as it is dependent on lightings. I will not be using MH as it is not effective and would need some advice/input on tank height for T5s HO lightings.

Corals would be a mix of SPS and LPS, and livestocks would be more invert themed with the typical tangs and reef safe wrasse.

Starting something new always seem so exciting, but it is draining. Well if we were all DPMs things would be a lot easier ;)

Cost for a good quality tank does not come cheap.

I am definitely going for a 2ft cube and no more than 2ft height. Taking into consideration liverocks and sandbed, it'll be about at most 18in of water, not to mention clearance between light set and water surface.

Anyone has a cheap place to recommend for tanks? A ball park figure for a 2ft cube tank from Kelantan Lane?

Forget to add another point, get the biggest tank you can afford. When I mean afford, not only the tank alone but what other equipment you need to have too! Branded stuff do work especially those from German ones! :eyebrow:

Really appreciate all the help I can get from fellow reefers.

I am looking for a 2ft by 2ft by 1.5 ft tank - was considering 2ft cube, but I will be using only T5s, so it's a risk that the light might not be sufficent for corals placed at the bottom.

Also looking for a wooden stand of reasonable quality. Just a frame to support the main tank, and my 2ft sump. As for equimpment wise, I upgraded from a Prizm to a Aquamedic Turboflotor Multi SL, which should be sufficient.

Man, it's tough looking for a good deal. I personally don't mind spending on a quality tank, just short of the moolah. Right now I'm stuck in transit between NS and going back to school, and schooling isn't cheap.

So it's really amazing how helpful you peeps are.

I was told that Kelantan Lane may be a good place to source for it. Basically the tank must have the overflow compartment and holes drilled for pipe fitting.

My current tank is utilising an overflow pipe. I have a soft spot for small sized fishes, and there's always a possibility that an inquisitive fish might get stuck in it.

Happened 2 months back when my small regal decided to sleep in-between the combs of the over-flow intake.

By the way, I have a 2ft tank to give away with a bag of bio-balls.

Emm... you have ideas that will probably fit better in larger tanks... for a 2ft tank (or cube)... I'll suggest you take away some ideas so that you can still have a theme in the end of the day... not Rojak :)

Bro Jervis,

Point noted. Actually, I'm transferring my current livestocks first. This consists of a several small pieces of plating monti, small frags of staghorn and digitata. A sand anemone, and a few small pieces of Zoa frags. I mentioned LPS, but I don't intend to go for pratas and lobos, not at the moment. I agree a bigger tank would be better for such corals.

I've always been an invert lover (shrimps, hermits and etc) used to have several scarlet hermit and shrimps, until my pistol shrimp (non-invert safe that can't be paired with shrimp gobies) wiped them out. Too little info on this species of pistol, and I blundered by not observing its behaviour first before letting it loose.
