lighting for clams ??

hi...newbie reefer here...i am just wondering if a 10000 k x4 pl tube enough for tridacna clams to survive ??? btw does it make any difference if i place it near the surface ??? this light fixture contains 2 blue and 2 white bulb each at 10000k....pls reply soon....... :thanks:

Not good enough for clams... they will die within a few weeks or months... as their energy stores run out... they need intense lighting. Lots of T5s or MH is best.

hey if its a 4X55watt, you should be able to keep in fact most clam species although it is better if you keep low light demanding clams such as squamosa or derasa. But if you place crocea or even maxima up high, you should be able to keep them, but IMO for maxima or croceas go for MH. In fact some high grade maxima need >250watt to thrive. Bad point abt PL is that they get dim very slowly and to us there wun be much difference but to your inverts they are lots of difference and they will not thrive as well as before and in fact some will bleach and by the time you notice it, it will be too late.

it just says ...a type of flourecent bulb.....whats that suppose to mean to me...i blur liao.....btw i bought the bulb at aquamart for 200+....the owner of aquamart who is a clam expert said its enough for clams >>>????.....please explain whats a T5

huh clam expert????? :blink::blink::blink: i believe in this hobby, no one has yet the right to call themselves expert. ;););)

is 2 T4 PL 55watts x 2 which is 110Watts enough for a 2 feet by 1feet by 18 inch tall tank ....which i am think to keep clam such as squamosa or derasa...temp at 26.5 to 28 temp using fan to cool........and i am thinking of placing the clam right on the top near the surface of the water about 3-4 inch away from the light....do you guy think it ok ? .....help ....

not as hot as metal overhead light .....compare PL to T5 , Pl ligthing is produce more heat than T5 and T5 is a lot brighter than PL ...and for PL you need to change the tube after 5-7months after use because it will get dimmer...... but T 5 can last longer aand bighter ....for 1year at least .......
