bioballs or biohome???

I have a sump tat looks like this concept...and at the bioballs section, I would like to either put bioballs or biohome...but dunno which does a better job in reducing nitrate...Also I saw many different size of bioballs, does the size matters? Any bros can advice? Thanks in advance...

IMHO, i think u can leave that compartment in your sump empty as the refugium would be good enough to export the nutrients..

for both bioball and biohome, without proper care and maintenance, will have the possibility of becoming a nitrate factory..

How do I properly maintain the biohome to make it successful??? And can I just add live sand right away into my sump??? I have been running my sump just with the filter pads for about a few days already...its connected to my main tank which I had for 5 months plus already...and there are some fishes,invertebrates and soft corals in it...I am going to add 6 inches of sand to the middle compartment...wondering how I should go about adding it? can I just add 6 inches of sand right away? or should i add slowly like maybe 2 inches at a time through a period of few weeks or days? Cos I am afraid that there will be another nitrogen cycle which might caused the death of my livestock in my main tank...pls advice...thanks!

I heard in wetwebmedia that bioballs are too efficient in converting ammonia, to nitrite, to nitrate, hence they become nitrate factories. I would leave it out and save your $.

Sure!

There is some argument that putting a DSB in a sump area that is not as large as your main tank area is not very effective. Some believe that for a DSB to be more effective, the area of the remote DSB should be the same area as the main tank. That's up to you to decide.

But you can put it straight away. All of it. 6" - 8" is fine. Studies have shown, that anything over 8" is no longer beneficial... now if only I can remember the link to those studies

I wouldn't use biohome or bioballs at all. Nitrate factories....

My refugium area is 1ft(length) x 1.5ft(width) x 1.5ft(height)...I think should be okay...

I think if bioballs or biohome are managed effectively then they should not create nitrate. At least this is what I read somewhere. But reefkeeping is suppose to be fun and simple. I would go without them too, less risk, and husbandry, and more simplicity - hence more fun!

you u can have all the expensive equipment money can buy but if ur filtration system is not to the optimum filtration.

its been always tt i thought of finding better ways of doing filtration and thank goodness caused of my line of worked tt involved filtration.

Biohome is used to get rid of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate..
