zheng02
i read from other forum they say it will lower down your nitrates, because vodka is basically a dilute ethanol and ethanol reduces Nitrates to Nitrites...

SRC Member iantoh Posted January 30, 2007 SRC Member Share Posted January 30, 2007 hi there zheng02, i know several bros locally that dose vodka as a carbon source for denitrifying bacterias in their system. a good bro, whose tank thread you should check out is bro weileong (losmandy) on the other forum. From my understanding of the practice, the vodka (other substitutes being sugar, ethanol, vinegar, etc) are used as a carbon source to fuel the growth of bacteria. As these bacterias grow, they assimilate nitrates and phosphates, and are then exported through efficient skimming. several notes of caution though... even though in most captive systems, the bacteria population is limited by carbon, this isnt necessarily always a bad thing because whilst there are strains of bacteria which we like, like the nitrifying and denitrifying ones, there are also pathogenic strains that could spur bacterial infections on the tissues of corals. and though there have been reefers who've dosed sugar, vodka, etc to good effect, they've also been those that suffered crashes, so dose with caution, and after youve read through all the relevant threads on RC. if you do dose, dose slow. all the best bro, ian Quote My Goniopora Nano!
