Hi Guys. For a tank with 2 feet depth, is the T5 solite 24W enuff for clams? Need your expertise. Many thanks. :D

Well... it depends how many tubes in total and what kinda tubes you intend to use... they all play a part... and what kinda Tridacna you planning to keep? They do have slightly different lighting requirements :)

Hi

Im not the poster but i find this interesting myself.

Which species would take lower light? (It seems that of the two that seem most commonly available - crocea and maxima - that the latter would take lower lighting)

Also, assuming the tank was 2 feet deep, and running on 10, 000k bulbs, for example, how many tubes would you think would be required for either a T crocea or a T maxima?

Just curious to know, dont mean to hijack the thread.

for a 2ft tank with a 2ft depth using a 10,000k MH tube will be one only...

but for 3ft tank with a 2ft depth using 10,000k MH tube need at least 2..

Thanks for hte reply Alvin! What about if the tank is 12" deep?

Btw, in all these cases, lets assume that if the tank is, say 24" deep, the clam is on the sand bed (ie 24" away from the light) cos if not you can argue that lower lgihting is possible if hte clam was 2" away from the surface.

IMO about clams....as long as the tank height dosent exceed 32"....based on a 2ft length tank, 1x10,000k MH is sufficient for clams...if u want better results, u can add supplements by adding 2xT5 HO blue.. ;)

10,000k tube is very strong....lets say if u use a 20,000k..i wouldnt recommend you to place the clam in a area lower den 2ft in height...

not possible.. if u use mh, most probably u might wan to let us know wad is the wattage of ur mh?

i'm using 1x250watt mh and my tank is 2.5ft depth.. check my last thread.. my tank i keep 1 squamosa, 5 crocea and 2 maxima. :) all are doing very well with that depth. ya.. so u might wan to tell us wad wattage u using.. and with the amount of clam in ur tank, u got to have a stable ca.. which ur clam might take in quite alot.. and causing ur ca to drop if u don have a cr in ur tank..

hope wad i contribute do help.. maybe more ppl can give comments? :)

Hi

Alvin, i sorta get what you mean but, whether the tank is 12" deep or 30" deep, youre saying that 1 (150w?) 10,000k halide should be good.

What i meant was what is the minimum lighting level for a clam (say crocea since that seems the most common in sg) in, say, a 12" or 18" deep tank. Cos in that case, wouldnt t5s be enough?

Thanks again

Mika

T5s HO are generally enough to sustain a crocea...but place it on a higher spot of the tank is best...

however, i dun tink 2 tubes is sufficient.. ;)

4 shld be jus nice..

Hi

Thanks Alvin, that cleared it up for me

Just one last thing, are the clams likely to fade out or brown out under the lower limits of their lighting range? No point keeping clams under the bare minimum lighting only to have them go brown!

mostly, they wont go brown...they jus wont open and the thing inside(dunno wad is tt called) will slowly deteriote....u gotta get the clam out asap b4 it spoils the water...
