New to Singapore, from the States & I need my fix

Recommended Posts

Greetings everyone!

After finally settling down with the move, I have some free time to explore the reef scene out here in Singapore. For starters, I am happy to see that there is a local reef forum here. I’m sure I will be interacting with many of your as I get back into the scene.

Just a little bio of me, I’m from the States and prior to moving here I had two reef tanks. Sad but true I had to sell off both tanks. It is amazing how long it takes to setup a well running tank and within an hour or two your masterpiece can be broken down and loaded onto a pickup truck and hauled off to its new owner’s home.

I’m not sure that I will have two tanks here but I am interested in setting up something during my stay here.

What I need helps with is local knowledge on where the best retailers are out here. I’m on the East Coast so if there are shops close to this area it would be a plus. Also since I’m starting from scratch, it might be helpful if someone can provide shop(s) that produces high quality aquariums and the furniture that goes with a typical setup.

Thanks in advance,

ScubaSteve

Hi Steve,

I am relocating to Singapore in early April and am in a similar position to you! I posted a thread here a week ago with regards to finding aquarium and furniture makers.

I found an aquarium maker through the net: www.craquarium.com.sg. Not sure if they are any good.

Let me know what you find!

You can take a cab to pasir ris farmway, there are quite a number of suppliers like Iwarna, my favourite. Good price, products and great variety too.

Many thanks for the replies and information provided. It is very valuable and I am sure that I will be neurotic as I will be checking out everyone’s recommendations. I guess that is what I love about this hobby, you find the vendors and you can short list them down to you very own “preferred” list. Generally speaking, I frequent just about a handful of shops once I do the master tour. Also I will be reaching out to those that sent me a private message after the New Year.

I did have a chance to visit a few places this week. A few that were located on Balestier Street(sp). First of all I can’t believe the prices on corals. They are dirt cheap compared to the US. For example, I discovered that most softies run in the price range of S$6-10. That is unheard in the States. $30-40 US is starting prices softies. I should mention that I used to live in Southern California where the reef scene is big, not in the mid of the country where prices are expected to be high. The prices on SPS, three for S$100 – again unheard of; you are looking at a starting price of $75 US for one SPS.

Okay enough about prices. I guess the prices here are reflective of the proximity where the specimens are collected. In any event, before I start – I will need a tank.

I’ve decided on a 4 foot long by 2 feet wide by 2 feet height. I’m still trying to design the tank insofar as to where to place the overflow and what type of material to use. So if anyone has ideas or is able to share their best practices I would love to hear them. I know it is a matter of preference but I like to hear some ideas so that I can consolidate and customize. My stand needs to be at least 30 inches in height. Again, I’m not sure what type of material I will be using. I guess I want to design something that I can easily dismantle and transport to the States, minus the pumps, lighting and probably chiller too since the voltage will not match.

I’m not sure what filtration methodology SG Reefers are using now-a-days but my intent is to create a very simple and clean system. Tank, overflow, big sump, skimmer, deep sand bed, and lots of variable currents.

So if anyone can send me designs and ideas I would love to hear them. Also any recommendations to reliable, reasonably priced, expert tank makers please let me know.

Totally not the right forum but can anyone point me to some local scuba shops as well. I’m a PADI Rescue Diver.

Thanks,

ScubaSteve
