Hammer and frog spawn are hardy corals but they do require good lighting to thrive.

IMO 36W PL is not good enough...may not survive....like subjecting them to a long lingering death which can last for as long as a year.

Temperature don't exceed 29C is OK but if you add on more lights, temp will also go up.

IMO fox coral, requirement is different from hammer, seem like they do better in a lower temp enviroment. So far have no success in keeping them.

Not at constant 28-29C.

Temp varies from 27-29C everyday.

Infact they do very well, growth (not just expansion) was good till I move them to another tank. Converting the tank to a full sps tank.

Try to increase your lighting 1st and see what the temp you are getting.

If it does not exceed 31......go for softies...........forget about hard corals. Anything higher than that keep only fish or add more fan or get a chiller.

I have frogspawn and hammer also...

my temp is between 25-27 degree with one fan blowing @ the water...

my lighting oncludes 2 pl 36W. I think 55Wmight be better.

So far, they are doing alrite...and i try to keep the ammonia level at min. ard 10-15ppm.

My PL set got from thomson nat**e... It's a 2 feet one with e-ballast. Are the ballast capable of supporting 55W PL?

And what's the cost of a 55W PL tube?

Beside light and temperature, what kind of water flow is require?

i reckon the clear winner in this case would be hammer. in a recent post about jewels, i read they don't too good in home reefs. and i personally feel that if you think you don't got enough lights for hammer, elegant and frogs shouldn't even cross your mind. just my 2 cents worth. correct me if i'm wrong.

Here is my 8" big hammer, notice that the right-branch is "shitting" so this is not a very nice pictures. But still nice though...

Anyway, DrJekyl_MrHyde, I suggest that you might like to ensure that you system is able to support those corals before you invest, else, all your waste investment might as well as putting into good use like creating a proper marine tank enviroment.

Note that survive is one thing, but however, what about their health in long-term basis? Most or all corals will survive best between temp of up to 27degC with 28 as the limit, anything higher, they will not be at their full beauty though they survive.

Actually IMO hammer are more delicate compared to frog spawn
