Giant clams

Does giant clams really helps to clean up the water? They take up NH3 or NO3? Some said NH3 some said NO3. Besides that, do they take up other nutrients as well?

Yes but never fast enuf....

clams has been shown to thrieve on nitrate, and in well aged , efficient skimming system.

as the clam relied on their zooxanthellae for food, it absorb inorganic and organic nutrient form the water for the zooxanthellae to benefit. such nutrient include ammonia and nitrate and phosphate .

nevertheless, attention should be paid to water quality for clam to thrieve.

nitrate removal can be drastic, if large number of clam are introduce to the aquarium all at one time.

So the huge amount of NO3 removed if large number of clams are introduced is it a good sign or a bad sign? Sounds good to me, but think about it further, could cause harm too.

although clams does absorb nitrate .

but i think it is better to introduce clam at acceptable nitate level in the first place .

say like < 20mg/l

ensure sufficient lighting for ur clams too . if not all ur clam all die on the same time will have drastic effect on your tank too
