Lim, isn't my clam considered gaping?(picture above

Yes your clam is gaping. But does not look bad enuf to kill it.

Most clam gap when first introduce to new tank, which is a sign of stress. Given one or two weeks, it will shut up...

Equipment:

30G Corner Tank with 10G Sump, 2 x 24W artinic T5, 1 x 24W 10K, 1x 24W 20K, 3" Grade 0 sand & Live rocks, Activated Carbon, Bio-home, 2 x Seio M620, Hailea 1/2HP Chiller, Redsea Pro Skimmer

Live Stock:

Turbo Snail x 1, Green Mandarin Dragonet X 2, Blue Tang X 2, True percular x 2, 1 x Algae Bleenie, Clarke clown x 2

Reef:

1 x 2" Blue maxima, Red/Brown/Purple Mushroom (Discosoma), Pink Ricordea yuma, A little colony Brown/Green common Zoanthus, Red/Pink/Green US Zoanthus, Eagle-eye Zoathus, 14 Branch Goniopora Pandoraensis, 1 Starburst Polyps, 3 + 2 Branch Frogspawn, 4 Blasto, palythoa, Cheato

RIPs (Since June 2005):

1. Sabae clown (KO by Clarke clown) 2. 1 branch melted frogspawn 4 branch 3. Golden maxima (Ripe the base off rock by me) 4. Algae Bleenie x 2 (Starvation) 5. Blue Maxima x 1, 2 x Maxima, 1 x frogspawn, rics (Overtemp...)

hi minireef .. your clam is not gaping .. it's normal .. I guess how you interpret gaping depends .. coz all clams look like above .. Henry from Marinelife taught me a good way to tell is the shape of the hole .. if it's longish oval .. its not gaping.. gaping most likely is closer to round .. the other thing to watch out for is the translucent membrane between the shell at the sides .. if it's torn or stretched .. it's a bad clam ..

Lastly if your cleaner is 'attacking' the clam .. it's already gone .. a disgusting way to tell before it becomes a nutrient bomb when you see this happening is take it out and smell .. you should smell sea :P .. if you smell rotten egg .. it's dying or dead..

Again .. gotta thank henry for this tip .. almost threw away a good clam .. BTW they get shell shocked too :P .. sudden changes in conditions .. and they can hide in the shell for up to 2 weeks (mine) ..

Thanks for the great tips qunzo. I read from Julian Sprung when a Clam is introduced to a tank they will be stressed and give off offending smell that attracts shrimps. The shrimp will make the situation worst. Should the clam overcome this period, than it will do well. So now I know I need to take extra care in the initial breaking in peroid.

My Reefing Mission:-

To manage the waters and lights with efficient resources, disciplined husbandry and prograsive knowledge.
