you talking about surface skimmer or protein skimmer? surface skimmer? come come let me type in some five cents worth of advice from me. :P

according to my freshwater experience, oil films become visible on the surface layer of the water mainly because of the food you feed the fish. now this water actually prevents gaseous exchange between surface layer of water and the water itself *pretty true since oil actually prevents oxygen from going through*.

another thing that I learnt from freshwater is that it blocks the proper direct exchange of sunlight for photosynthetic plants. meaning to say that the film actually hinders proper absorbtion of light rays. why this happens, I don't really know although I can speculate that because the spectrum needed is reflected *I may be wrong so don't scream!* or something along those lines.

I hope my five cents worth helped you in any way possible. however if you have a sump tank, a surface skimmer will not be needed because the flow system of the sump itself already produces a skimming action *something about water going into the intake or something like that. again, sorry if I sound blur*

cheers and happy reefing (=

Hi, A surface skimmer is as named. It skim the surface of the water of any stuff that floats, less dense than water(oil, dead flies? etc....) IOS is an example of such equipment! ;)

If you do not have a IOS or any overflow system, then just hook a tube/pipe/hose to a intake of a filter/pump etc... and secure the intake near the surface of the water!(it should be ###### the water from the surface!

If not, just buy a surface skimmer attachment from a LFS, saw a simple one that cost $5. Must attach to an intake! ;)

W@ng L@Y K@@ and Ke@ng S@@@@ sells them.... its just an attachment that sticks out from the surface and when its attach to a intake, its sucks the surface water. Need a bit of DIY because only one standard size! Its just a small one recommanded for smaller tank!! ;)

Most if not all food produced oil film on the surface!!

I got one myself.. however.. when i placed it in my fresh water tank... it doesn't seem to do much and the bubbles are not fine, just the same as normal air stone bubble..

However, when i placed that skimmer into my marine tank... wa la.. tiny bubbles forming all around and even during cycling process, i can actually see those dirty yellowish water forming.... i would definetely ay it's a good thing, not sure for freshwater tank though..

I am using one surface skimmer. do note if the opening of the skimmer is small, its basically skimming veri little surface residues..(read - useless)

I got flies still doing their daily swim after hour last I see it. some more still can do 50cm swim sprint.. wahz..!

bro virus.. your talking abt protein skimmer. surface skimmer is different lohz. surface one suppose to skim any residue on the water surface.

actually i found surface skimmer useful.. it skims the surface and help increase the 'gaseous' exchange.. but

bad thing u can't just be convenient and throw floating food in cause they be suck u so u must submerge the food with water then put in...

i bought mine for $18 fluval brand..
