hi there bros alien07 and searching4dan,

im sure everyone has their favourite skimmers, and both becketts and deltecs are reknowned for their capabilities, but i think locally, the H&S skimmers are certainly under-rated. they preceded both the beckett valve and the Deltec range of skimmers, and are still highly regarded in the states and in europe. one merely has to check out the H&S club's member count on RC to verify that.

it uses the same needlewheel pump as the Deltecs, and is really quite and energy efficient for its class. I like the high overturn rate of becketts, but that comes at the cost of higher energy consumption and inconsistent skimmate consistency in my experience. the beckett requires a lot more tuning than a needlewheel pump. i couldnt leave my beckett to its own device for a fortnight without it beginning to skim inconsistently, in the sense that skimmate production reduces over time, or becomes more dry despite a wet setting, and because it tends to create large bubbles amidst a cloud of small bubbles, foaming stability isnt ideal which leades to a longer break-in time each time you restart the beckett. plus the heat load generated by my Rio26hf was quite considerable.

ive had a H&S for about three months now, and ive not touched it barr siphoning out skimmate when necessary, and it skims out a predictable amount each day without me cleaning the rising chamber. i dont wish to begin any skimmer debate here, but am just chiming in to give an indication of this skimmer's value, and at $350, its a steal. youve to try a H&S or Deltec to appreciate its ease of use and quality. i used to think becketts were the best, which is why i plumped for one in the first place, but in my personal experience, i prefer the H&S. a deltecs lovely too, but its way larger in physical size for the same rating, and quite abit more ex.

cheers,

ian
