MH DE vs SE

Hi all,

Besides the connection and physical appearance, what is the main difference ?

Would you use DE or SE ?

DE produces alot of harmful UV radiation and pain must be taken to ensure the glass provided does shield UV..otherwise your stuff will die under the light...

single ended does not have this problem....

some DE bulbs have the rare UV stop...like osrams bulbs...but their colour temperature is not suitable for reef usage....

those established brands like BLV bulbs..do not have this uv stop coating on their bulbs..i also wonder why

I read that DE gives out more par watt for watt compared to SE.

I'm using DE, place 14inch away from water surface still burn my acro

BTW what's the wattage of your bulbs...can the intensity reach the bottom of the tank with 14inches above WS?

I'm using 250watt. The light able to penerate depth of 2.2ft.

No intension to change to SE as its going to cost a sum of money again.

Maybe shift the pendant higher is the next alternative lor

Also, SE is easier to handle for changing. Just screw out and replace. DE, must remove glass shield.

BTW is your pendant commercially bought or DIYed?

how many 250watts can it contain and is it suitable for 3fter?

does it contain radium and daylight combined or jus 6500k

are you using any UV Glass?

I think with UV glass shd help min. sun-burn your SPS.

They are aquarium lighting from reputated brand. Seem okie for the bottom clam and coral even I shift the pendant higher, but I hope not too high as it gonna waste my electricity shining light out of the tank.

For 3ft tank, 1 to 2 pendant is enough, this depends on the angle of reflection from the pendant too.

DE bulb only come in <6.5k, 10k, 13k and 14k. The only 20k is XM which is only available in US.

Hon, its very strange when you think about it.

I suspect your UV glass shield is not doing its work. Maybe you can source from another place?

First time, I heard of a good commercial unit like yours burning up corals... even SPS... if you can't solve this problem... you can't keep corals for a very long time..

Its doing better with the bulb 14inch above water line. But I would really wish that the bulb aren't so far away, wasting the light output to my living room

no. of bulbs per pendant(how much $$) what is the temperature of your bulbs.?

tot i saw coralife 20kk DE somewhere on the net in overseas online shops!

BTW does the brand u are using have any pendant that hold SE bulbs?thanks!
