Ever colllect your own livestorck

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and plan to move to Malaysia but very close to Singapore (MY FAVORITE CITY). I used to live in Micronesia and collected my own specimens and had very good success probably since my fish went from the reef to the tank in less than two hours.

My question is this. Is this legal in Malaysia and Singapore? I used to used drop nets and then collelct the ones that I liked. I had extreme successs with chaetodons and Moorish Idols, and would like to do that when I move to your area. However, I'm not sure about curing live rocks and inverts ,etc. Any advice and any people do the same thing. would love to hear from you. I sure look forward to moving over there. any replies would be appreciated.

:o It's an offence to collect marine life forms in Malaysian Marine Parks or Reserves.

http://www.nre.gov.my/nre2005/English_Vers.../pengenalan.htm

Malaysian Fisheries Act 1985.

This act states in sections 43 & 44 that:

(1) Any person who in any marine park or marine reserve in Malaysian fisheries waters without the permission of the Director-General in writing commits the following shall be guilty of an offence:

* fishes or attempts to fish;

* takes, removes or is in possession of any aquatic animal or aquatic plant or part thereof, whether dead or alive;

* collects or is in possession of any coral, dredges or extracts any sand or gravel, discharges or deposits any pollutant, alters or destroys the natural breeding grounds or habitat of aquatic life, or destroys any aquatic life;

* constructs or erects any building or other structure on or over any land or waters within a marine park or marine reserve;

* anchors any vessel by dropping any kind of weight on, or by attaching any kind of rope or chain to, any coral, rock or other submerged object; or destroys, defaces or removes any object, whether animate or inanimate, in a marine park or marine reserve

(2) No person shall carry, use or possess within a marine park or marine reserve in Malaysian fisheries waters -

* any spring-gun, spear gun, spear fishing equipment, harpoon or suction gun; or

* any other kind of weapon potentially harmful to any aquatic plant life, aquatic animal life or to the coral reef structure.

In section 25, the Act states that any person who contravenes or fails to comply with any provision of this Act shall be guilty of an offence and where no special penalty is provided in relation thereto, such person shall be liable to a fine not exceeding twenty thousand ringgit or a term of imprisonment not exceeding 2 years or both.

Of course if you are collecting ornamental reef fishes which are commonly found around coral reefs areas. You don't expect to catch Moorish Idols juz by throwing a net in Malaysian coastal waters. :D

Strangely enough I've caught moorish idols in the most polluted waters in Micronesia. Hardly any on the reef, usually near piers next to where sewage is dumped into the water. Just to show you that they are poor travellers and not that sensitvie to water quality. I kept them for years and they ate like pigs. My friends who bought them in the US could never keep them for over 2 weeks without them dying.

Oh, I forgot to ask, are there plenty of marine fish stores in KL (don't need any names just if they exist) that sell good quality marine fish that haven't been druged or caught in any way that will insure their death after you buy them.

:o well these are occasional 'unlucky' ones that migrate from one location to another. Otherwise, $poor$ reefers like me :( will be staking out at piers, jetties & whats-nots...with a net & wait for a blue moon to try to catch blue-rings, spore angels, etc... :lol::evil::pirate:

:huh: Mmmm, if only the law permits I will 'raid' Labrador, Chek Jawa & the outer islands. :evil: Why waste time casting net off piers & jetties & end up catching ikan bilis. :D:lol:;)
