Refugium are good IMO as it can remove waste material. Helps to absorb nitrate, PO4. I am currently using one with my skimmer.

It also helps to "transfer" algae to the refugium instead of the main display tank.

Moreover, the algae eg Cheto can be fed to my ever hungry tangs as natural food.
