To turn ON lights during cycling period ?

one question. shall we turn on the lights during cycling period ?

or totally blackout the tank ?

my belief is to turn on the light, let the algae bloom until the nutrients level in the water is nil, and algae will eventually die off...

but if turn off the light and covered the tank with newspaper, the algae will not grow and die evetually too due to insufficient of light..

so what do u guys think?

when u transport the rocks back into ur huse plus the sudden change of water conditions...millions of bacteria are goin to die off inside ur tank....so it will take some time for it to house inside the LRs once again..

off the lights during the cycling period because the bacteria are afraid of lightings and it will affect the rate of ur cycling time IMO...

I'll recommend turning on a tube of blue lights to encourage coralline growth on the LR which in later progress will help to curb algal growth.

And I don't think bacterias are afraid of light. More properly put, the type of bacteria we want to culture are heterotrophic anaerobes which get their food from dissolved organic compunds in the water. If there was light, there might be a bloom of autotrophic bacteria which might have the capability to kill off the heterotrophic anaerobes via quorum sensing

yupx...the blue lights will do..can on 24/7..but i suggest u dun on it for the 1st 2 daes...there muz be a reason y some reefers dun on their lights during the cycling period...

my tank has been running about 1 year.

recently i removed the sandbed and total clean up the tank..

now i'm using 100% new water + old LR.

i'm wondering if i can put some softies in the tank first, like mushrooms n yuma ?

well shd be no prob... in fact thats what i just did when i transfer frm old to new tank. I ran new water for a day, put in my old liverocks next day n then zoos n mushroom the next day n so far no prob at all with them. In fact i put in 3 "old" fishes another 2 days later... so far nh3=0, n02=0 , n03 =5
