Hi,

I'm looking for a float switch/valve, using it to control my sump return pump. Pls let me know if you know where to buy.

This is bec, I've DIY a sump using siphon pipe. In order to avoid situation that my siphon pipe failed, and all the sump water being pump into main tank, casuing a flood in my house, I'm looking for the float switch/valve, that can control my return pump to stop when the water level is drop.

Or if you have other method, pls let me know.

:thanks:

Why not use an overflowbox instead? You can get an I-Box from Eaquanature. It's less of a hassle to setup and it might actually be cheaper. The float switch will cost you around $30 to $40 each(you can get them at Sim Lim Tower, 3rd or 4th level or order them online from RS Components), then you should also get a 24V relay and a 24VDC power supply to switch the pumps cos it's not safe to connect your 230VAC pump directly to the float switch. You DO NOT want 230V of electricity going into your tank in case there's a leak in the float switch, but if you REALLY must use a siphon to bring water down to the sump, PM me and I can share some info with you.

Hi zapper,

I've done up the siphon pipe already. May get the I-box, if the effect is not good.

I think even for getting the I-box, the float switch is still important, as there is still chances that the overflow things is break, or stuck, then the return pump just happily pump the water back and leads to overflow of the main tank water.

Will check out at Sim Lim..... :)

:thanks:

Hi, some of the reefers use a check valves to prevent the water to flow back into the sump. In you case that might not help... you may want to drill a hole in the siphon pipe just below the water level you want so in case of the siphon fail, the water level will drop below the drilled hole thus letting air into the hole and breaking the siphon.... ;)

Its easy and cost nothing!

Might work! Anyway, can you post a picture of the sump so I can confirm that this works in your case!!!

Reef on...... :peace:

Hi clear tank, thanks for the suggestion, will do that. The float switch is mainly to handle situation when the siphon dun works, while my sump keep pumping water up till main tank full!

My sump is simply a normal 3x1.5x.1.5, with a 2x1x1 tank inside having a dsb of 5-6 inches. Main idea is to increase the water capacity to stablise the parameter easiler.

:D

Hi MV3i, will check that out.

:thanks:

You can connect a float switch to turn-off your sump pump but that will cut off your tank circulation. Water will flow back via the pump line by siphon when the pump is off and the water level will drop. This drop will turn on the float switch and activate the pump again and the cycle continues......What if no one is home to restart the main siphon?? The start/stop interval and cycle will most likely be very short..and if it goes on for long periods, you might be stressing the pump and it might get damaged. The starting current in a pump running with load can be high. The interuption in circulation will also kill you tank inhabitants if it is left for too long. There is actually a way to restart or 'kick-start' your main siphon automatically (in case it is accidently broken), also by using a float switch and another smaller and cheaper pump. PM me if your still interested and I can give you all the details.
