I notice when my MH is on, I can't seems to see any poly extended out at all. But I notice when the light is off,it will starts to extend! Is this normal?

I think its normal.. usually they feed in the dark. :)

I notice some reefers had shown pics during lights on of the SPS extending out those hairy stuff from the pores!

Does it mean that we shd oni add additives during nite time for them to feed on?

:thanks:

This is my opinion, in nature, full polyp extension usually occur in the dark (at night). Not sure the reason, but it could be due to planktons are "more active" in the dark.

In our tank, we usually feed when the light is on, and some coral may have acclimatised to this timing. Hence, you see polyp extended when light is on.

Other parameter such as sudden change in water conditions, lightings, etc also affect polyp extension too.

This is what I've observed from my SPS tank, not sure about LPS and softies because I've not tried them before.

Some of the label on the additives also recommend us to dose when lights are off.

I think your explaination is correct (IMO)... if the corals/plants do not require sunlight for food generation (photosynthesis)... there's actually no incentive/benefit for them to feed at that particular timing. From what I gather, planktons are more active at night and also there are a lot of spawning activities happening under moonlight... so your SPS can have a better feast at night

The Polyp Lab System Reef-resh I am using... 1 of the 4 bottles is actually Coral Food. They strongly recommend dosing in the dark.

Polyps extend all the time here. I'll be worried if they don't. and yes they do extend more at nite, but you should be able to see polyps in the day quite easily.

In the nite, the extend primary for respiration purposes, due to competition for the lack of O2.

There could be a no. of reasons, last I use to have a potteri and a golden pygmy and for some SPS, I don't see polyps until the nite. Where they were no longer in the tank, the polyps extend full time.

Care to list some of your tank parameters and is your SPS secured nicely on the rocks. Sometimes I find that when they don't anchor themselves well, you won't see much polyps.

It's secure to my LR! Will strong lighting have an impact on why the poly is not extending? Till now, I'm not able to see the poly during lights on! :( How to tell if the SPS is dieing?

1) 2 X T5 = ON from 12.30pm to 11.30pm

2) 2 X T5 = ON from 1.30pm to 10.30pm

3) MH 400W 14K = ON from 3.30pm to 8.30pm

4) Sg = 1.025g/l

5) Mg = 1440ppm

6) Ca = 430ppm

7) NO3 = 0ppm

8) PH4 = 0 ppm

9) ORP = 200mv

10) Temp = 26 to 27.5 deg

Fish?

Generally speaking if the SPS is stressed then yes they won't extend much. So if you think its lighting issue then move it away first. How high away are the 400W from the surface

Dying symptoms could be a shedding of tissue, slow and sometimes fast. Or an expelling of zooxanthellae, also commonly called bleching, where the coral turns whitish and very translucent. Corals are not dead and can recover from bleching events. Some corals may shed alot of slime when stressed, but a lack of PE(polyp extension) is almost always not a good sign.

Is the SPS new? What type is it? Some like birdnest and pocci, stylo, are very easy to extend and some are more sensitive.

My MH is abt 1ft abv the water surface.

I got 7 anthias, 4 Clearner shrimp, 1 yellow-head goby, 1 red scooter, 1 lemon lip, 1 algae blenny, 1 mandrian, 2 turbo snail, 1 blue tang and 2 leopard wasse.

Can help me identify this SPS? Got it from Irwana as I wanted to try out 1 1st b4 going full swing!

Sorry, I'm real lousy at SPS id. Maybe someone here can help. Only to say that it does look blech to me.

That piece does not look like a beginner one to me. If you get the chance go for millies, pocci, stylos and even staghorns, I think should much easier. For all its worth, you may not be having a problem after all, I think I would find that one challenging too. Maybe you could select something like that after you've established more SPS in the tank.

To be frank, I dun even know how millies, pocci, stylos and even staghorns looks like! :nc:

As for the SPS I got, I think it's due to the lousy pic as I'm using my HP to capture the pics. There's still sign of green color at each tip of the SPS!

:o

To be frank, this pc also doesnt look healthy to me. I do not know the ID, but i have experience with it before and like what madmac said, it is not an easy specie.

What is your kH level? And btw the MH photo period may be too short in my opinion. ;)

Wht's the ideal MH hours? I notice there's lot's of green algae that's why I shorten the MH period from 6 to 5 hrs oni! My KH is ard 9dKH!

kH =9 is fine.

BTW, what test kits you are using?

What water you are using? Tap water or RO/DI or Distill water? How long is your tank?
