yesterdae i pour in 4kg of marine salt

however when i use the meter to test

it reads 1.014.. (the correct amount shld be 1.02 - 1.03??)

Hi Bro,

4kg is a bit too little. Calculate the total amount of water you have in the tank and sump, and look at the packaging on the salt. It should give you a rough idea how much salt you need to purchase.

It is better to get more salt, as you'll need them for your future water change.

I try to keep the sg between 1.023 - 1.025.

Hope this gives you a better picture ;)

Invest in 1 refractometer, a china made one cost 80 dollars....beats guess works and wrong reading from those cheap plastic type.

Get a new pail, with a hand scoop. You can fill the scoop with salt and fill the pail with water, mixing the salt. After a while you can estimate visually the correct amount to mix.!

salinity is ideal 1.21 to 1.25. the evaporation rate will be quite constant when you add the chiller, so top up of water when you do water changes may be less saline.

Get a refractometer, I got mine from Jireh, and have since gave up on the less accurate plastic ones

Hi Searching 4dan,

just a simple calulation,in cm- lengthXwidthXheight

divide by 1000 = volume in litres.

If you want gallons (as salt mix usually in gal) divide litres by 3.75.

your tank - 75cmx50cmx50cm + sump 60cmx30cmx30cm

Total : 64.4gal

almost all saltmix (anybrand) is half cup of salt to 5gal of freshwater.

You will need 30cups of salt.

or 8.4kg of salt

since you have already used 4kg, you need another 4kg

(this does not count water displacement from rocks/equipment etc) You will need to adjust the final specific gravity/salinity because of this.
