When Feathers Lose their Heads

Recently, my featherduster worms have started dropping their heads? Does it mean they are dead or whats causing this..anyone can shed some light?

Hi! this happened to mine as well. sometimes, it is due to the water condition, sometimes, it is just that the head is getting ineffective.

just keep the water at top condition and it will regrow...

another possible cause is it is eaten by fish....

Dun think its eaten by fish, cos the head is lying on the floor of the bed.

So this means the worm is alive but headess? = )

I had this happen to my coco worm once..bt its been like 2 months...still no head..

Mine actually changed to a different coloured crown when it shed its old one

I have one too.. dropped all the feathers after 1+months.. now all starting to grow back but very short still.

mine just disintegrates.. I never bother. Even when my shrimp molts, I just leave it in there.. somehow the nitrate levels hardly raises. That is why a good skimmer is a must.

Feather dusters/Coco worms usually drop their heads if water conditions change or if they are stressed.

Try to find out if any crabs in your tank are disturbing them. I notice that Camel Shrimps tend to find them a delicacy as well. I had a red Coco worm, that I thought had dropped its head, but I realized my Camel shrimp decided to help itself to an expensive meal.

Well I only have a boxer shrimp..that could be it.

But I cant rule out the crabs..as I do oftenr hear clicking sound when the lights go out? How do trap a crab?

clicking sound can be 2 possibilities. Pistols or Mantis.
