weipro skimmer

hi,

can i use my external filter as an alternative powerhead? i've only got a small tank(60x22x30cm) and i already have an internal filter (to generate some current). putting in an extra phead will probably make it too crowded,

i'm planning to get the smallest weipro skimmer...

thanks,

zurc

u thinking of using a canister filter ? usually it would be used together with an eheim U-pipe(looks like an umbrella handle) to pump back into your tank. then the flow would be downwards, unless you can de-direct it using other attachments

another alternative would be the eheim 300

see the specs here: http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=EH1000

it is small and uses only 5w of power ^_^

actually, i already have the eheim 2211 canister filter... i'm planning to connect the out-flow of the canister filter to the in-flow of the skimmer... then from the skimmer, back to the tank...

A neat trick i use is to use an airpump (if u have one) to supply air to the skimmer's air inlet nipple instead of using the air suction hose/pipe that comes with skimmers. Makes stronger bubble foams.

yup.. that's what i'm going to do...

ok so you are trying to reduce the no. of pumps inside your tank, that is understandable bcos they are often unsightly and take up precious space :P

but a word of caution your skimmer may not perform well or may not skim at all due to the head loss(of water pressure), your connection may not (and is unlikely) to supply sufficient power to run your skimmer effectively

your eheim classic 2211 pump output is 300 lph http://www.shopsolution.nl/shop/home.asp?s...uk&deptid=eheim

i dont think that is sufficient to drive the weipro skimmer

anyway your skimmer output is also facing down so not much of a current will be created to circulate your tank :(

ok not to put down all your plans, you can try them out, different tank and different pumps/equipment have different outcomes(hope you get what you want), it is really beneficial to try out new things and learn along the way, it is invaluable experience :D

dont be too disappointed if you do not get what you want. there are other things to worry about that can really get you pulling at your hair like ich for instance !! :heh:

:peace:

I think the pumped air will reduce flow to the skimmer. Its acts as a blockage to the venturi's 90º inlet. I don't think its any good to tee off from your other pump(canister). The weipro 2011 works best with a dedicated pump attached as close to the venturi as possible. When size right, the pressure will pull in the air for you... naturally. I've found that somewhere btw 1000 to 1200 l/h works very well with the 2011. The small height of the skimmer means you don't need too a bigger powerhead to get them out fast.... and IMHO, tune the 2011 for wet skimming will give you the best results.

If you're inventive, and have a sump, you could try for a gravity/pressure feed to the 2011. Pressure from the overflow, see the DIY overflow, can be surprisingly great enough to power that small skimmer.

Hi,

my current setup is similar to yours. Only difference is I am using weipro 2014 and another canister, . The canister is below the tank, about 3-4 feet below the intake of the skimmer, the outlet of the canister actually gets "tee" off 2 ways, one to the skimmer and one to my chiller. So far so good. Not sure if skimmer will be efficient this way but the bubbles looks good (foam like). Never can get the kopi colour skimmate the other brothers here can get though (maybe bioload is low). I only managed black dry skimmate.

I am very very very new, this is just the way I set up due to space, cost and "effort" constraints. May or may not work. Just a reference.

Have fun :D

Hi,

I ditched the idea of getting the weipro skimmer and went for a Red Sea Prism skimmer instead... I'm pretty sure that sooner or later, I'll be itching to upgrade to a "better?" skimmer, and I'll end up spending more... i've already spent a few dollars on two very cheap skimmers that I immediately shelved upon trying to fit in my tank.

regards,

zurc
