The first aid course from St John is valid. There is no requirement to take the EFR from PADI. Can save you quite a significant sum of $$. The EFR course covers more skills pertaining to diving whereas the course from St john covers a wider area. Its much longer too

Get yourself fit before you go for your rescue course. It's the most physically demanding course of the PADI's syllabus.
