at ur browser, go to http://192.168.1.1

if u r being prompted for password, enter "admin" and password leave blank... from there u should be able to access ur router options...

then search for the option whereby u can set WPA...

once set, in order to use ur builtin airport xtreme on the connection, set its WPA too...

bro u mean the 'Web Encryption Key'? aka WEP?

i've used it last time, but since my computer spoilt, and i forgot the password for the WEP, i called up starhub to see if i can salvage the router

in return, they told me that setting the 'Restricted Port' is a better way of securing the network from external users, since the router will use MAC addresses to allow access for different computers

i suggest calling up the Starhub hotline, and request the customer service technician to guide you along in setting the restricted access

one advantage of this is that WEP will somehow reduce the speed of the Internet access(as told by the technician), and if you have an easily guess-ed password for the WEP, you network will not be secure as well

WEP and WPA is also to deter people from sniffing out stuff you do easily.. imagine sending clear txt over the air for people to sniff.. IMO its a must.. WEP and WPA makes it more difficult for people to make out these packets. It probably will take months or require enough packets to decrypt information. By then you should have already changed to a new WEP or WPA key. Of course, select a higher bit one like 256bits for WEP.

Another way to 'lock' is to do MAC address filtering. Every network/wireless card have a unique MAC address. Just allow your known card MAC address.

IP filtering is also a way. Disable DHCP on your wireless router and only add apporved IP addresses. Of course, you will need to set the IP address on your system.

Alternatively, you can also set your DHCP range to only 1 or 2 address(es).. if you set to one 1, the once you are connected, no one else can connect to it.

Also disable SSID broadcast. this make your wireless router undetected to others trying to sniff out a wireless network.

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

1. WPA is more secure than normal WEP (u seem not to noe wat is WPA)

2. u should hav "salvaged" ur router by using the reset button on ur router

3. which neighbor is gonna guess ur WEP anyway if they dun noe u realli well to noe wat password u may hav used... no one is realli so free to employ a "Dictionary Attack" on u just to share network connection with u? unless u got some confidential data that he wans to intercept

4. it is naive that a professional cracker cannot penetrate ur MAC address filtering

in conclusion, in home normal usage, use ard 128 bits WPA (i presume ur router supports this) (some routers having too high encryption may encounter higher packet loss) and disable ur SSID and change it will suffice...

Yo spider one, no time no hear.

Simple.

Just called your telco and ask to guide you for encrypting your router

using a password.

I am with Singnet and the wireless router have a standard 16 digit

hexadecimal password.

My connection is encrypted. No one should be able to use it easily.

use browser enter http://192.168.1.1 (default IP unless changed), the username/password to use to gain access is "admin" and "admin"

u should be able to see the main page of ur router webapp... it is supposed to be a easy to use application, just dun panick, dun change any default settings unsure of...

the pictures below r found on the web, may not match exactly wat u see on ur router webapp but should be similar....

go to "Wireless"

cap-20010.jpg

note that the second field is the SSID which is ur wireless network name... u can change it to anything u like, just make sure that it is quite unique

if broadcast is selected to be 'disabled' then ppl cannot see ur SSID by searching for wireless networks within ur wireless area

still Under "Wireless" go to "Wireless Security"

cap-20011.jpg

choose the settings as shown

the "shared key" field is where u enter ur security key (it should be in hexadecimal form, 0~9 and A~F, 4 bits for each 'letter', thus 16 'letters' for 64 bits)

as for ur wireless adapter (used to link to ur wireless network), if u r using the generic windows settings instead of the manufacturer's client software,

cap-20013.jpg

note that u must put the SSID that was set in the router and the network key is the security key set

Clownfish, nailed it... thats what you need to do... you should be able to access it from your mac, with the URL he specified.

You shouldn't need to configure it to accept your Mac's IP addy. Your mac will 'latched-on' to it automatically. Jus make sure you have the password ready when it is asked. Remember to check the box which says, "store password in the keychain", that way you'll never need to rekey-in that crazily long password again.

As for the mac... enjoy,... theres no turning back to windoze... j/k only... :D
