Is it true that the MCB needs to be connected directly to the DB of your house in order to prevent the power trip of your aquarium to affect the entire house?

Pls advise! :thanks:

almost 90% of the time, it take just one appliance to trip the whole board.. so it doesn't really matter. No diff.

Just as youself, how many time when you encounter a power trip an certain shop or place, it only affects a certain area? .. probably very rare. It trips the whole main switch.

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

Hi guyz;

The main purpose of MCB is for overload protection. It really provides limited protection against short circiut/Earth leakage current.

If you connect too much equipment to a point, it draws high current and may cause fire hazard, high heat, damage to pump. MCB are sized by current and type. When MCB is used, it must be appropriately sized. Our DB box mains MCB is 40A, then connected to 6A. MCB also has something call time curves which is the response time to trip. Home use is the fastest trip time, B curve.

To couple the short circuit and Earth Leakage protection, an additional RCCB is use to further protect our life against electrical shock. This device is the first to trip when circuit is short or leakage is detected, but no protection against overloading. So if your DB box has this, your tank's MCB will not trip before this RCCB. All modern home has this RCCB.

So in order for short circuit not to trip ur home, the current sizing of the tank must be lower than the home DB main MCB of 40A. Of course, there should be no RCCB for it to work. But removing RCCB will be a very bad idea, danger to life.....

so, do we put a second RCCB between our tank and the Main MCB at our house so that if tank trip the house will not trip?

That is a very good question.

Though I have not tested it myself, If you at least put the same model of RCCB in your tank, it should not trip your house RCCB. There should be some inrush or outrush type RCCB. But those RCCB we buy for commercial are just typical home application, all same type, just to protects life.

I'm not 100% sure as I only did 2 years of electrical in school, after that I major in Computer Engineering... Otherwise I can check with my PE friend. :paiseh:
