hydrometer/refractometer

Recommended Posts

Which hydrometer is accurate, the tube one or the swing arm?

Is refractometer far better than the hydrometer, or can live up with

hydrometer for measuring specific gravity?

general usage , use the swing arm hydrometer

for accurate usage , use refractometer

dun use the floating one , very inaccurate

a swing arm hydrometer is enough to give u the sg reading...but if u wan to go for a more accurate reading....use a refractometer then..

view my 2ft tank thread update here!!

How to get an accurate reading from swing arm hydrometer?

Everytime I take readings, I always need to take a few because the readings are different!

1.it depends on the calibration of the swing arm to ascertain the accuracy, best is if you get a buddy or a nice LFS to calibrate your swing arm against a refractometer

you take a refractometer and test some salt water, say reading 1.025

then you take your swing arm hydrometer say reading 1.023

so subsequently every reading you take u minus 0.002 from the reading to get a accurate measure B)

2.taking reading with a swing arm it is important that there is no bubbles in the hydrometer, most likely your swing arm has some tiny bubbles hanging on, most hydrometer comes with a plastic (looks like a coffee stirring thing of sorts) that is to get rid of the bubbles that would cause an erroneous reading. thats why every reading you are taking is different from the one before.

A good hydrometer to get is coralife deep six ($18) i think those are better than those $5-$6 dollar found on the mkt

i hope i answered your question, any doubts pls ask or do research online :)

:peace:
