HRmz, straight forward answer...the lesser pumps you have in your tank, the less the heat that will be transmitted from your pump/powerhead into your water. :)

Even if running external pump... the heat generated from the pump will also be carried back into the tank by the water right? For sure my tank water is cooler than room temp.

Although some heat might get dispersed to its surrounding... but in what proportion?

Kindly advice  before I make another round of investment in pumps

everyone know heat travel from hotter area to colder area .

assumpming the pump generate the same amount of heat even in water or externally . the heat will dissipate into ur tank if it is in water , and the heat will dissipate to the air if it is place externally .

i guess it does help , however it will cool to what extend and proportion , i guess no one really know . :)

But my theory is... based on ur explanations... if I have cooler water (cooler than the pump and room temperature) running through the pump, the heat generated from the pump will automatically be transfered back into the pump via the cold water.

Hehe... I know it gets technical... anyway I will still explore the ideas of having external pumps instead of internals.

In water, heat has no where to go except in the water. So 100% goes into water.

External, heat gets distributed to the air surrounding the pump and also the water passing through. heat that goes into water is only partial or maybe even a small percentage.

So which is better? Of course external.. nothing technical.. its just a matter of where the heat goes to.

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

Yup same sentiment here because if you never use an external pump before you will never know how warm the pump can be. But it all depend on the pump, some will give out more heat and some may not. So most of the quality pump should give out less heat but nevertheless a good chiller will control the temp.

For me, before i add in a cheapo internal pump to run my FR w Rowas, it was 28plus. Now, it rises to 29plus.:( With that, l do somehow believe that tt internal pump does contribute to the rise in tank temp.

IMO, the only consideration for external pump is to ensure tt extra care is taken to ensure all connections are tight and secured so that there won't be any leakage or sudden rubber tubes dropped off during the day, esp when no one is at home.

Yupe the connection plays a very important role here... ok I will go around and look for a reliable and quiet external pump.

Just want to share..

I had a dymax pump3000 the other time, wanted to use for chiller and other equipment. I use internally, the water turned from cool to lukewarm. It's that HOT... I tried externally and after a few hrs, i touch the pump, it is almost unbearably hot to touch.

So my conclusion is that dymax pump is super duper heat producing.... either that or i got a faulty one ;)

Spend a bit more money buy a better pump shd be worth it.. like that then ur chiller wun need to cool down as often i guess :)

Since you're a fan of Aqua Medic....I've heard that Ocean Runner Pumps run pretty cool and quiet...u might want to look at those.

As for the internal and external debate....not much more to add but do note that the main source of heat comes from the surface of the pump motor and is not in full contact with the water passing through the pump when set up externally. The internal setup causes maximum contact of water to the pump body which causes the heat to transfer directly to the water columns as opposed to the air in an external setup.

HTH...

ps. Good to see that you're doing more research before commiting to equipments to save you the trouble of buying and selling off equipment at a loss...good luck with the setup...

Yeah...me too...i think the fun part is in the pursuit of getting an equipment and all the research that comes along with it... ;)
