Is protein skimmer mandatory?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm trying to build a new tank (estimated 24"x48"x18") for both corals and fishes, but i was advised by the supplier that i don't need a skimmer as there will be a sump tank and filtration built in. Due to time constraint, i anticipate to be able to afford water changes once every 5 to 6 weeks. Just wanted to find out whether a protein skimmer is really necessary to maintain the condition or it is a 'nice-to-have'?

Advice are much appreciated.

Thanks.

Skimmer is a must if u r going to keep corals!!! :D

No point saving money and then u spend more on buying more corals when they die!! :)

Also try to buy a better skimmer based on ur own budget as u need not need to upgrade it when u find out it won't serve u any more.

Hope this will help!!! B)

With a skimmer, water changes should be at most once every 2 weeks.

Without a skimmer, water changes should be more frequent, your 5 to 6 weeks water change is really not enough.

It seems that u are not even considering using a DI for water change base on your plan. If that's the case, u must go very slow when adding LS as using water straight from the tap will pose some issue in maintaing yr water parameter. Must be careful when selecting LS in order to suit your plan!

I use 2 hv a 1 ft nano tank which I oso put in a DIY skimmer which helps alot to remove the waste from the tank! :P

Juz my 2 cent.... ;)

Thanks for all your tips and responses.

 i also suspect a little bit about what my supplier was telling me... perhaps they are as ignorant as I am.

Anyway, I will make sure i budget for a skimmer in this case.

i am currently using the OSIM filter on my tap. It uses a reverse osmosis method to filter tap water. I think this should get rid of the inpurities from fresh tap water.

Thanks for everyone's guidance.

:D

You must also note that a skimmer also removes trce element from the water hence additive must also be introduce as to maintain a healthy enviroment for you tank inhabitants.

Cheers and good luck.

so, it is like the salt or minerals are lost and needs replenishment...

.. yup, i got that on my list too.

thanks.
