wats the metal thingy on the vertical pipe end cap?

Thats a air valve to initial flow when use for the first time. I suck the water to the pipe. Then open the ball valve in the sump for flow to start... Then finally the air valve opens to allow air in. Thus when return pump fails and return, it will carry on the overflow...

Not much new addition while I'm working on improving water quality/chemistry part. The brown algae you can my house are dinoflagate so it is a pest. I have since eliminate it from LR with small tint on the LS. I'm winning the battle after 2 month.

I can't buy too much LS/Coral as I I have no space. Okay, i'll take pix after I fix up the rest of the project. :D

Bro, I notice you are not using a protein skimmer (not listed on your signature)... could that be the reason you are having difficulty maintaining certain parameters at undetectable levels? It's actually quite amazing... do you have Nitrate problem also? What's the reason for not running one?

I do run a skimmer Macro Skimmer AS150 at the sump. Not the best but serve its purpose. For quite a while, I have been dosing phyto, feeding pellets, monthly 30% water change, topup with distill water. I suffered old tank syndrome of dinoflagate.

Until 2 month ago, I took a labourous effort to reduce nutrients big time.

1. Stop dosing phyto

2. Add Cheato, thank to shawncel

3. Reduce feeding by 50%

4. Use DI water for 10% water change weekly

5. Stop dosing Strontium.

6. Increase Kalkwasser.

The dinoflagate stops after 2 month, returns the coraline. Bro shawn will know the state of the dinoflagate, as he visit my house then.

As you know, this weekend I did the water purifying project, somewhat different. Clarity of the water improve quite drastically, not only PO4 reduction.

There is not much different from many system with exception that most I do myself as I do enjoy the process of getting hands dirty, learn in the process, enjoy the fruits in the tank. :lol:

Ic... you need to update your signature then... coz I was like :shock: when I can't find your skimmer :P

Yupe... not much of a difference really... except you really learn the the truth about reefing (everything from chemistry to physics) while many of us rely on equipments, R&D that we paid for and keeping our hands clean :huh:

As for feeding of Phyto... what other alternative food source have you chosen or simply rely on photosynthesis? I read that the dosing of Phytoplankton has very little help in the biotope... if not doing more harm in polluting it ;)

And why did u stop dosing Strontium? Is it not one of the essentials for coral growth? Or is it fertilizing your diatom too much?

Flow is not the issue here as I quite horrid current created by the pair seio. Anyway, The algae thingy is semi-pass tense now. Will update pix again.

Jervis;

I stick to my original regime quite closely, adding addtional additive alone the way.

The main source of high nutrients are

1. phyto

2. pellets

Phyto in essence are mircosopic algae plankton that feed to coral. I figure/guess after running a system for such long period, the tank should be able to produce by its own. But it is a hypothesis of mine. The rest rely on lights.

Strontium is not an critical mineral so I stop for now. I focus on Ca, dkh and Mg. Bcos I not testing it so I temporary stop now.

By the way, diatom is "New Tank Syndrome". While what I suffered is dinoflagate (Old Tank Syndrome). ;) They are quite different.

It is better to be blueish than brownish. :D All the red corals are in the sump. Once confirm thing algae are done, I will bring them up.

I dun do now as I'm still raking the sand everyday to quicken the retreat of the algae.
