i hv a baby carpet anemone.

has been there for about 2~3wks already and i hv not done any feeding yet. And i think it is doing fine, opening nicely.

Can i continue this way, providing light and flow? or do i need to feed it with some shrimps or sotong?

Very worried after reading all the anemone obituaries :D

if u worry its hungry, let me suggest something simple:

feed a tiny piece of sotong or shrimp for the baby carpet anemone, if it eats, it means it is hungry, and after eating, it will be happy.

if it doesn't eat, or spit out, then it means that its not hungry and will continue to stay happy that way. just pick up that sotong/prawn and throw away (or feed other LS).

Post us a picture of the baby anemone?

Since it is a small anemone and you seem to be eagerly wanting to feed it, I have an advice for you... Do not overfeed:

http://www.wetwebmedia.com/anempt2.htm

Underfeed, underfeed, don't feed! Underfeed, underfeed, don't feed! Most losses in captive systems are the result of over-feeding. How many more times do I feel I need to write this? Bunches! Some anemones have been kept for YEARS without any intentional external feeding. Know your stock! Many anemones (especially larger species) are detritivorous (a polite term meaning they eat poop), planktivorous, and largely chemoautotrophic/photosynthesizing species/individuals that hobbyists try to over-stuff with meaty/prepared foods. My bid for largest cause of loss of anemones is the consequences (lack of oxygen, hydrogen and other sulfide production...) from over-feeding. Cut it out! Within normal temperatures and other conditions, most can and do do well on weekly feedings.

Take note. ;)

hi there vipermako,

if the anemone is sticky- that is, its nematocysts are working well and its sticky when you touch it, and you think youre providing it with sufficient lightings (carpet anemones are quite light demanding), you can go without feeding as theyre able to meet their nutritional needs through photosynthesis. but as youve only recently acquired the specimen, it might be good to try out target feeding it a piece or two of frozen mysid shrimp using a syringe or something to see how it reacts to the feeding.

there are lots of organisms which constitute plankton and zooplankton which are smaller than copepods and thus invisible to us that i think are present in our tanks so that provides some supplementation for the anemones too. if the anemone extends its tentacles longer than usual, its also a sign of its trying to ensnare food, so feeding it a little might be timely then. as bro cirrus mentioned, if feeding at all, feed super sparingly.

all the best with your anemone ya bro! would love to find a tiny carpet anemone meself1 hahaah.

cheers,

ian

mine seems to be moving towards the inlet of the HOT filter.

any danger of being sucked in?

My atman HOT filter comes with a built-in surface skimmer, hopefully this would relieve the suction pressure if the intake is blocked.

yeah my carpets will move when towards flows .. i experimented by chg the direction of my water flow n they follow the flow. guess they like strong water movements besides the lights...

also got a coral-band shrimp that has not been fed for more than a month or 2 already. Seems healthy and morphed once or twice.

Can i continue without feeding. The tank condition seems ok, the corals are growing, the anemone, shrimp and hermits seem ok too.

Nitrates and phosphates level acceptable. No change of water for past 2mths or so. Water crystal clear.
