In my opinion at 20ppm is ok as along as the corals (if you are having any) can tolerate the levels. Too high levels of nitrate/phosphate/silicate etc may get absorbed into the sand bed or rocks and may present some future problems just as i have experienced.

thanks for the info.. I've got rhodactics, mushies, yumas, zoos, gornios, suns and supersuns.. only thing that couldn't flourish was greenstar polyps..

rowa enough to get rid of po4 and silicates I guess

Yeap experienced that too, starpolyps cannot flourish in high nitrate environment. The 3ft tank which i rely on plenum and canister filtration is interesting - where no skimmer is used, all natural filtration. But kinda fragile where careful balance is needed.
