Is BIOHOME a must?

Hi guys

I've came across a few guys putting in as much as 2kg biohome into their filter system.

How different are they from bioballs or conventional ceramic?

Will it not fight with the LR in terms of hosting bacterias?

Will it crash the system in the long term?

For my 24g NC, how much you reckon I should add to the back compartment?

i use around 1.5 kg for my 2 feet tank in the canister.

they are essentially the same as bioball or ceremic ring in term of function as they house bacteria . however it was claimed that the surface area of biohomes is a lot more than commercial product , thus enable more colonies of aerobic bacteria to house

they are different in such a way that due to their porous surface , anaerobic bacteria can be house in too.

bacteria grow exponentially . like a log curve. they will not fight with live rock

have run the system with more than 1 year . dun think will crash . i put them in a hugh mesh bag and only clean the mesh bag in a while with tank water .

nitrate level just measure 10 mins ago with tropic marine test kit : <1mg/l to 5 mg/l

2x1.5x1.5 tank

Lighting: AI hydra 52HD

Skimmer: Deltec SC 1455

Reactor: Minimax; rowaphos

Skimz  ; NP biopellets

Wave Maker: MP 40 WQD

Return pump: Eheim 1262

Chiller: Arctica 1/10 hp

Thanks Hammy... I know what I will do, I shall wait for the LR and sand to fully populated by bacterias, then maybe 1 month later, introduce bags of biohome. I do have available space at my back compartment. Can easily fit a bag I think.

Unless other bro feel I should do otherwise, pls advise.

Great! My back compartments are quite dark especially towards the bottom.

my tank is a 3ftx1.5x1.5 without sump, use to have lots of biohome in my corner overflow. my no3 ran sky high, close to 100ppm. read through the forum thread, found some of the lao jiao running their tank with only skimmer and lots of life rock. nothing in their sump. so i tried it, and it is working fine for close to 1 year. only life rock, good skimmer, frequent water change, and do not over feed or put too many fishes at one go...hope this help...note that they are many systems out there.... B)

My Nitrates are quite low now (2 ppm), so no need to crack my head to add in more stuff la. Maybe I will start to do something when it goes out of hand.

A lot of bros claim Biohome is a lot better than conventional ceramic rings as they are more coarse hence more surface to grow beneficial bacteria. I will add them into my tank once Nitrates is out of control (or at least showing sign of).
