Terryz_
Just leave the shrimp and snail in your tank... They cant tolerate low salinity... Quote Member of:
SRC Member arcanehacker Posted March 1, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted March 1, 2006 man.. hypo you snails and thats it.. never hyposalinate any invertebrates. Quote Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth? SRC Member Elune Posted March 2, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted March 2, 2006 CANNOT!!! invertabrates cannot go under Hyposalinity. U'll kill them in less than 4 hrs.

SRC Member juscool Posted March 2, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted March 2, 2006 Guys, whats hypo?
SRC Member Elune Posted March 3, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted March 3, 2006 by the term "Hypo", they mean "Hyposalinity" method. Its a form of treatment (against ICH / Marine Velvet; perhaps more), whereby you progressively lower the salinity of your tank's water (or Quarantine Tank's water) to a certain level. The Ich parasites on your infected fish will die off, but your fish will be able to tolerate. This is roughly wat i can explain. For more info on Hyposalinity, refer to the thread in "Disease and Parasite Treatment". There is a proper explanation on this Hyposalinity. Just my 2cents. SRC Member juscool Posted March 3, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted March 3, 2006 Thanks bro. So it means its better to also keep the tank's salinity lower to prevent itch?
SRC Member arcanehacker Posted March 3, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted March 3, 2006 Thanks bro. So it means its better to also keep the tank's salinity lower to prevent itch? no.. hyposalinity is actually way below. Forgot how low though. For eg just by making your water to 1.018 doesn't cure itch.. it needs to be way lower and you fishes cannot live in such conditions. they only can tolerate it for a while. SRC Member FionaFiona Posted March 4, 2006 SRC Member Share Posted March 4, 2006 Thanks bro. So it means its better to also keep the tank's salinity lower to prevent itch? Hyposalinity is a treatment method. One should NOT maintain the tank's SG to be at that low a level for prolong period. The targeted Specific Gravity is 1.009 (the usual Sg is between 1.023 - 1.025). But this 1.009 target should be progressively achieved over a period of 3 days, not instantly. (Someone correct me if i m wrong; cuz i m still new). Hypo cannot be carried out in main tank if ur tank consist of invertebrates and other corals. Only FOWLR tanks can hypo. but Hypo is recommended to be carried out in a QT. Hyposalinity has 2 obvious advantages. 1) the ICH parasites cannot tolerate the low SG. 2) ur fish do not need to much effort to expel salt from its body (since salt content of the water is low), so it allows the fish to channel more of its energy to fighting the parasite. Do read up the thread on Hyposalinity at the Diease treatment and parasite control thread. just my 2 cents.
