Octopus Reef Skimmer

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Can someone please give me some advice. I'm new to the hobby and have recently setup a 300 liter tank with an 80 liter sump tank.

My skimmer doesn't seem to be working properly, almost nothing except a little water has appeared in the cup.

The skimmer is a reef octopus from a company in china (www.proteinskimmer.com.cn).

It pulls the water in from the bottom of the sump, not the surface.

The water seems pretty clean still but I was expecting to have some skim from it by now.

Does anyone know anything about this brand of skimmer or can anyone give me some advice on how to improve it or if its normal for nothing to happen by now.

The tank is just over 3 weeks old and I've got two damsel fish and some live rocks and dead corel in it.

I can send a photo of how its setup if it will help.

Thanks in advance,

Richard

Hi all,

Thanks for your advice. The link to the review which was posted about the octopus skimmer looks good.

Its been working now for about three to four weeks and literally nothing except a small bit of clear water is in the skimmer. The bubbles in my skimmer look good (about the same as the review) and there is a very very small amount of skim / waste at the top of the skimmer but its not making it into the cup. The bubbles go up to the bottom of the cup to where you unscrew it.

I have a small quantity of cured live rocks and the bioload is quite small. I've just got two damsel fish in the tank at the moment to help cycle it.

How can I adjust the air intake to improve it. Do I need to take the pump out to adjust it ?

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards

Richard

Erm, are you planning to add in more LRs? Its more advisable to add LRs at one shot, adding them after your cycling has completed is a bad idea...it'll restart your cycle again. Oh, you don't need damsels for cycling...add in enough LRs or a piece of market prawn will do...get them out of your tank when its easier now and give them away or something. :)
