Thinking of setting up 1ft tank

Hi Guys,

I've never kept a marine tank before though I have been keeping other fresh water fishes for over 20yrs. Currently, I have a spare 15inch tank at home and am thinking of starting a marine tank for corals only. I may add 1-2 fish and shrimp.

Please advise on what I should get for starting and maintenance of the tank, as I have no idea on things like skimmer and other equipment.

Thx

Welcome to SRC.

1feet abit too small. I think 3 feet is a good beginner size.

Read up the stickies in the newbie sub-forum. You should get all the inormation you need there. Anything else. Feel free to ask us in this sub-forum.

Welcome to SRC bezz. Like MuaR chEe mentioned, a 3FT tank is a good size to start with. It leaves us with a little more room for mistakes. Visit our nano section and you'll see lots of successful small tanks. I had a 1.5Ft tank before....and i have to say my current 3FT is less of a hassle after it has been properly setup. I change water less frequently and my parameters are more stable. Well, dun let us discourage you...have fun and have a great reefing experience.. :)

Thx guys.

I read up on some of the threads and have the following questions now:

- Can i used sand tanken from the beach?

- My company sends staff to inspect equipment placed at off shore islands once a week, so I can get them to bring back some cleaner sea water from those islands, is it usable in a marine tank ?

Thank you.

1. You can use sand taken from the beach, just do not be caught for stealing goverment property.

2. I will not reccommend using our local sea water, or any sea water for that matter. Firstly, it contains alot of bacteria, and I am sure some of them are harmful, not that kind where you want in your tank. And it might contain pollutants too. Only usable, properly after intense filtering and heavy sterilization. Then again, why bother to go through all this? Won't it be even easier to buy salt and mix it yourself at home?

Actually, it is no trouble for me at all. Just give them a 25L bottle (i have lots of those laying around my work place) and tell them to fill it with clean sea water. Was thinking I can easily go home and use this for water change rather than spending time measuring the sg of the salt mixture, not to mention must treat the tap water :pinch:

Thx for comments.
