Feeding clownfishes

Recommended Posts

Fellow reefers,

i just got a False percula clownfish yesterday. I put it in my newly cycled 2ft tank. It seems to be doing well moving around quite a bit. I know when fishes are newly introduced in an environment, they might not eat for a while. Today i tried feeding it Ocean Nutrition formula one pellets and Tetra Marine flakes but to no avail.. It went near them checked them out and rejected them.

1) How long does it normally take to get it to feed?

2) With my food given, are they acceptable to clownfishes?, if not pls recommend something...

I wouldnt want the poor cute little thing to starve......

:thanks:

give that cutie orange white fella a few days... if it still doesnt feed, then... but they should la... they are hardy fellas. juz make sure the pellets and flakes u feed them are smaller then their mouths... by bout half, else they will either choke or juz spit them out...

apparently mysis is good to feed too...but as always fish always need to feel secure in their new environment first before normalising their own behaviour.

Sometimes also i think food takes getting used to. My first few clownfish didn't eat the formula 1, but ate my friends hagen flakes...i was abit stunned and angry coz now what am i going to do with a full bottle of formula 1.

so after that finish, i decided to switch their diet to cyclop eeze, the flake one not the freeze dried. they also don't eat...i damn angry...then i noticed they sometimes take the smaller flakes so i start using scissors to just mince the flakes to smaller bits...slightly better...but still not ideal...after awhile if they don't eat and they starve they will eventually eat what u give them.

Just a glimpse of what i went thru...u might wanna try :)

cheerz

Just cant help to notice, but u mentioned newly cycled tank, so how long is ur cycling period?? r all the water parameter stable?? These may all contribute to the fish adaptation.

1) Takes a couple of days for the clown to get use to ur tank, and it will eventually start eating.

2) these foods are OK for ur fishes. But sometimes, fishes are picky. Will refuse to eat. and like wat bro dreamzcape said : "wat to do with a full bottle of food"... Dun worry, when they are hungry enough, and left with no other choices, they'll eventually have to LPPL and eat what u give.

I remember a bro here said: "Fishes starve in weeks, not days". Dun worry abt it.

As the other bros above mentioned, Meaty food, brine shrimps, Mysis, etc all very nice alternatives. (Frozen storage troublesome only).

Bro Hondaker said Cyclopeeze also. I agreed, cuz my clown LOVE it! Cyclopeeze can replace Artemia, so clowns apparently love it, since they are most probably fed Artemia when young. Oh ya, 1 most important thing. The foods mentioned above must apparently be small enuf to fit the clown's mouth la~~~ too big and it will be turned off. (Imagine ur mum cook fishballs the size of a basketball.....)

By the way, sometimes I feed my clown fish with my fresh-water Fighting Fish pellets. It readily eats them too.

haha bro... not to terrify you, but wat may seem to be alive and kicking for your anthias, could be the other way around... where they are slowly starving... my copperband is forever pecking on my LR... but died from starvation 2 days ago... the tummy was soo sunken in... haiz. so heart broken...

tragic loss man...condolences..but this is a good example to show that we can't just rely on our livestock "looking ok". I guess this is why sometimes people have those little floating containment baskets to help acclimatise and also smaller feeding area plus zero competition, helps them to build appetite for the food and the confidence to feed :D
