What size chiller?

There has been lots of threads regarding chillers. I am trying to choose the correct size for my 5 foot tank. I find that many chiller manufacturers (e.g. those in China) tend to exagerate the specs of their chillers - saying that they can cool much larger tanks much more quickly than they can actually do!

So, please help me. I want to upgrade my small chiller as I have now added another MH light.

I have a 5' x 2' x 2' (approx 150 USgal) LPS reef tank. Lighting is 3 x 150W MH, plus 2 x 54W T5 actinic.

I am think of a 1/2 horsepower chiller. Sound about right?

believe it or not, my 5x2x2 with sump total water capacity of 600L is chilled with a resun CL650 from Aquamarin..most people think CL650 cannot handle my tank but i've used it for 1.5yrs now

my lights are : 2x250W Mh with 2x54W T5, 160W of insump pump and 100W outsump. the chiller is able to maintain the temperature at 27-28 cos i set it at 27...the average temperature when lights are on is 28 and this is also when the chiller kicks in the most, each time about 40mins-1hr then rest for about the same period of time. at night it doesn't really kick in much.

the pump supplying the tank is about 1500-2000L/hr

hope this helps!

shoelevy....thanks for that. Actually, i am not that surprised. I am currently using a CL450 on my 5x2x2, but its just a bit too small. it will hold the tank at 28 but I want it down around 26.5, and it wont do that.

I just bought the C0500 from Petmart tonight. Maybe its a bit overkill, but I can always use it on a bigger tank in the future ;)

Just something I'm pondering.. If all else equal, equipment wise, would we still need a bigger chiller for double the amount of water?

I have a 4x2x2. Intend to commission another 4x2x2. I can ride off all equipments from my main, so its like a connected loop. No other additional stuff needed... maybe only a normal T5. Intend to use it for my eel so no need for any other stuff.

Would the heat decrease since I have more water? Or the temp will still stay the same as now? So If I get a Chiller, do I need a larger one? As compared to a chiller for one 4x2x2?

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

Imagine the time taken to cool 100L & 1000L of water, which one will take longer! If yr chiller is under specs, it will hv to work very hard and in terms of power comsumption, I believe it will be higher and that means, higher electrical bills!

Haiz... damn sad.. think I just got to run the tank on a huge canister.. :(
