Mushie can kill a clam?

Once upon a time I had a nice healthly clam which was doing really well in my tank.

One day, a mushroom decided to sprout on the side of the clam shell (there is a mushie colony close by). The mushie got bigger and bigger until it was about 5 cm in diameter.

Every day the mushi and clam would open up and look so cool throughout the day. Then one day the mushie had disappeared but the clam still looked good. A couple of days later, the mushie was back and opening again - everything looked normal again.

Then, one morning we woke up and the clam had turnied to jelly - obviously it had died over night :(

And now, neither the clam nor the mushie are living happily ever after....the clam went down the chute, presumably with the mushy still attached.

So, my question is....Can a mushie kill a clam like that, or is it likely that the clam just died of this mysterious clam disease that some people have commented on in other threads?

Clams are very strange creatures to me.. They can look perfectly fine one day and just die the next day. I had 3-4 clams in my tank wiped out over a couple of days, with no signs of parasites etc. Till this day, it is still a mystery as to why those clams died. :(

cityofangels.....i agree with you - dont we have so many weird things in our tanks!

We once had three clams and two have mysteriously died. The third (and oldest) is still going strong and is the only one of the three that has ever shown signs (and continues to do so) of growing shell, so hopefully it is healthier than the others.

This hobby is full of surprises :D
