Green/bright green algae formed

Is it hard?

If it is, it might be coralline but if it's not, then it is nuisance algae :(

But if you tame me, we shall need each other.

To me, you will be unique in all the world.

To you, I shall be unique in all the world...

Coraline algae is purple colour right?? thats what i thought... so u mean coraline algae can be bright green also right...? The bright green algae look hard though and my new formia starfish is at that side of the wall where the bright green algae is.. wondering if its trying to eat the algae ;)

Hard green algae is most likely coralline - yep, you can get green coralline as well as the red - I have lots of green coralline starting to grow on my sump walls, especially in the compartment where I dose kalkwasser into (coralline algae like high calcium, high alkalinity water to thrive).

Real reefs don't have glass bottoms....(...think about it)

Thanks bro for yr reply... wanna check with u...it seem my rocks start to have quite a bit of coraline algae and also my frontal tank wall (purple coraline)...i am afraid that too much coraline algae will cause my Ca level in my 2 feet tank (+1.5ft sump) to drop too much...as i read up that these coraline algae do take in calcium and my system do not have a calcium reactor...so would such coraline algae deplete my Ca too much...

My parameters (juz tested using salifert testkits are as follow)

Ca - 400ppm

kH - 8.6 dkh

Mg- 1260ppm

N03 - 25ppm

I maintain my calcium and kh by dosing calcium (powder and soln form) and kH powder every few days...

Thanks

ong2ah...i think that if you regularly dose with kalkwasser, your calcium and KH levels should be OK. My evaporation top-up water is basically all fresh kalkwasser.

Most of us are happy to have lots of coralline.

Bro May&Bruce, i read up that kalk generally will cause Mg in the system to decrease... wouldn't that cause a problem in maintaining Mg which i think is a very impt parameter as it is a kind of pH buffer and help to maintain stability of Ca & kH in the system.... (this is what i gather from what i read up) ... btw i recently suffer 3 fish casualty ( 1 yellow lined chromis, 1 goby and 1 batfish)... the yellow line chromis die after i dosed Kalk in the middle of the night (4am)... so i dnt know whether its a coincidence or i add too much kalk...

Thanks for yr prompt reply. :thanks:

i think that it is good to also add a magnesium additive on a regular basis.

How quickly did you dose the Kalk? You should drip it slowly, not add it all at once. I dose about 2 litres per night into my 150 gal reef tank. I do it overnight at a drip rate that takes about 7 hours to dose 2 litres (I invested in a small dosing pump as I got fed up with always trying to change the drip rate from my plastic bottle and small plastic tap!).

I add in abt only less than 100ml into my 1.5 feet sump tank.. mixed the kalk in water in a small cup and add the clear water part in after 20min....

another guess is that my aerobic bacteria dying too much as i housekeep my sump tank to suck out the dirt at the bottom of the sump tank... maybe thats what caused my big fat chromis to die... :(

ummm, dunno if that was why. I also suck out the dirt at the bottom of the sump every couple of weeks.

When housekeep my sump that time... i took up my biohome and coral chips to wash in my tank water in a small container... i guess that may have kill some aerobic bacteria.... and caused a ammonia/N02 spike... thats my best guess.. as my chromis and goby being with me for long time... so fat and big... haiz... :(

btw, where can i get a dosing pump?? expensive??

ahhhh, could be the reason. I have no bio balls or coral chips in the sump - just rely on DSB, live rock and a good skimmer for everything.

One of the sponsors here seels them. I bought mine online from USA - cost about S$200 or so. Ones from our sponsors here are just as good and comparable price.
