Just want to share my experience. Singapore must be one of the cheapest countries to have our reefkeeping hobby. LS and equipment are both so cheap here.

I was in NZ over christmas and visited the biggest LFS in NZ, which was actually not that large! Equipment prices are double what we pay here, but the biggest shock was LS. Copper band for S$115, cleaner shrimp for S$90, and get this - chromis for S$32 each!!! Brain coral for S$80, etc., etc. The NZ market is small and they have tough quarantine procedures so the prices are high. Looking at prices on the internet from US and Oz, they are also very expensive.

We don't know how lucky we are here in Singapore! So next time we are buying LS or equipment here and think that the price is high, think again!

Happy reefing.....

Now then you know. :P No offense.

No need to look so far actually. Malaysia already much higher than us.

Buying Ehiem in germany is more expensive than in Singapore. Go figure.

Guyz;

Most Ang Moy countries have very strict QT procedure and high tariff for LS. They also have impossible high import tax for country without FTA. They also have environmental awareness interest group...

Singapore on the other hand is one of the higest FTA signed with friendly countries. Taxes is low. Blah Blah .....

Shipping to Spore is low too....

For me prices of livestock in Singapore is ok. For those who complain a lot about the high price are usually those who don't know much yet. Don't take me wrongly, when I first started this hobby I also thought that the prices here are outrageous until I start searching on the net and found out that it is the other way round.

flying carpet...yep, agree. I won't complain about a S$3.60 copper band or a S$25 LPS any more!

Basically, we are very fortunate in Singapore

Yes indeed Ang Moh countries, their LS price is insane. I was in Western Australia for the past 5 years and often go to the LFS window shopping.

The feeder goldfish is 8$ a piece. Then i told the ang moh guy, here in my country (Brunei) i feed those goldies to my arowana. He seemed astonished when he heard that. Because of the dependence on agriculture as a main export/income for countries such as Aust, N.Z, Canada, they do not take quarantine as a small thing, but a serious one. Yet sometimes paying 25$ for a coral makes me feel 'post-purchase behaviour', now i feel better. Prices of marine stuff here in Brunei is relatively higher than those in S'pore though some of us crosses the boarder to Malaysia to buy our stuff, taking advantage of their low currency. Some bro mentioned 80$ for a blood shrimp in NZ or Aust... tsk tsk... How lucky we are here in S.E.A where pumps, LS, acessories etc are dirt cheap!!

I bought copperbands at S$1.00 each, at Irwana. They are damn hard to keep! So, you're telling me in NZ they are selling copperbands at S$115?!

Alios...there are not many in NZ...it was Hollywood Fish Farm.....quite a reasonable set up shop, tanks and LS in better condition than most LFS here in Singapore. I can imagine the prices are high for many reasons:

1. Freight

2. Distance - some fish will die during the longer flights, etc.

3. Strict quarantine requirements..again more fish will die during this period

4. Smaller market in NZ, hence no volume discounts from distributers

5. GST is more than double Singapore

6. etc, etc
