Need Help On Tank Cycle

I setup a 2ft tank recently. After putting in the water (mixed with salt) for 1 week, i went to LFS and bought some cured LR.

Everything seems ok for the first 2 days after i put in my LRs. Disaster happended 2 days after i put in a MP (Thumb size) in order to start the nitrigen process.

All the worms, prawn and crabs come with the LRs died due to amonia spike :nuke:

After changing 50% of the water last nite, everything seems recovering and the amonia reading now shows decreasing amonia level.

my question now is

1. Will my LRs die? How to tell whether they are dying cause some forum mention that the LR might die due to amonia spike and things like tat.

2. The water still stink but not to the extend where the whole living room also become smelly. Izzit normal and how long it will take if it's normal  ?

3. The water is very cloudly. Should i do another xx% of water change?

4. I actually plan to re-do everything again cause the tank now like screw up. Should i re-do and if yes, can i just leave the LRs somewhere with water cause i think it's not advisable to put in LRs afte adding the water.

Please help

Relax. Its normal in the cycling process.

If the smell is not that great, don't bother to do any water changes. Let the cycle resolve itself.

Don't worry about the LRs. They will survive the process.

Don't re-do. You will only start off another round of cycling again.

Test your water every couple of days. Ammonia and Nitrite should go down to 0. Be patient.

Sounds bad. Looks like your tank has crashed. Your ammonia spike has overwhelmed everything.

I am surprised that a thumb-sized market prawn can cause such a massive spike.

Can I ask if you have failed/forgot to turn on any water circulation devices? A drop in oxygen during the cycling period will cause catastrophe as your living organisms do require sufficient oxygen during this phase.

My filter is on, i' sure about that.

Well, :( Now only left few small worms lying around the sand bed.. hopefully they can make it.

Btw, any idea why some of the sand changed color to "grey"?

So advise to re-do, some advise to let it continue cycle.. argh... dunno wat to do now. think i'll wait till end of this week.. if the water still stink and cloudy, i'll re-do again .. .sigh..

Can't believe a thumb size MP can wipe out almost everything in a 2ft tank in less than 2 days. :cry2:

Copper in a marine reef tank is disaster.

I suggest you start all over again after giving your tank a good scrub and cleaning to make sure that no more copper remains in your tank.

You can't keep inverts if you copper in your tank.

A canister filter does not provide oxygenation for your tank.

Dieoffs during the cycling period will cause pollution. If you forget to turn up water circulation with powerheads... well... its obvious more things will die.
